Homecoming Week!
By Danielle Tobar '10, Carleigh Cavendar '11 and Brian Oxenhandler '12
From the kickoff pep assembly to rain, to the fun-filled dance to yet more rain, this homecoming past was a good one (albeit a little wet) in which the Crusaders like the trees proudly showed their colors.
In powder puff and power puff, each grade enthusiastically claimed a winning title in at least one activity. Seniors won a close game of volleyball against the juniors; the junior girls stuck it out in an exciting game against the seniors for football; the sophomores dominated the freshmen in football; and the freshmen snapped back and took the win in volleyball.
The freshmen (pictured above, during their spirit day) went on to win float building, and in case you didn't catch it at the assembly, the juniors won the penny wars. (Pictured below, from left, are juniors Jordan Ruprecht, Carleigh Cavendar, and Shannon Yokley.)
Getting back to “regular” sports, the all powerful football team made an easy task of defeating Kirksville on October 24. To cap off the weekend, the dance was held on Sunday night, October 25. It's pretty much tacitly agreed it was awesome with a capital A! Rain didn't dampen the school spirit in the least, even when the unofficial picture taking location, the Governor's Garden, was ruined. No girl had on the same dress as another (thank goodness) and it would seem all that was left on the dance floor was good memories, a few water bottles, and a bunch of soggy umbrellas.
The top ten candidates for homecoming queen included Emma Booth, Marki Burnett, Sarah Buschjost, McKenzie Hamacher, Carol Kehoe, Paige Kolb, Callie Norment, Ally Pitera, Kristy Schebaum and Hannah Smith.
During the chaos of the week, these wonderful ladies were asked to answer a few questions in order to allow the student body to get to know them better.
When asked what motto she would like Helias students to adopt, Kristy Schebaum stated, "Have fun and be yourself." They were also questioned about what they were most looking forward to senior year, most of the candidates answered graduation! Miss Kolb added, "I can't wait to get all dressed up for spirit week and participate in school spirit."
There are lots of words to describe these charming girls! We wanted to know what three words they would use to describe themselves. Emma Booth's words were exquisite, charming, fun," Ally Pitera remarked that she was "always on time."
The girls were elected to the Top Ten by their own senior class. After that, Booth, Burnett, Buschjost, Kolb and Schebaum advanced to the Top Five by the votes of the juniors and seniors. In the end, the student body voted well, and Sarah Buschjost was crowned the 2009 homecoming queen.

Helias Homecoming 5K Run/Walk
Seventy people crossed the line…the finish line that is in our first Helias Homecoming 5K Run/Walk.
What started out as a cold and rainy weekend of events during the homecoming parade quickly turned into a beautiful, sunny morning for the 5K…perfect weather for runners, walkers and a victorious football game later the same day!
We had 10 participants ages 2-6 in the Kids Dash and 70 participants from ages 9-69 in the 5K Run/Walk. Julie Miller was the overall winner in the female category while Jean Pierre Espinoza took overall winner in the men’s division.
We would not have had such a successful event without the help of Gary Fogelbach, John Weghorst and Will LePage of the JC Roadrunners who helped us orchestrate and execute our first time event.
A HUGE thank you goes to Mary Haskamp and the Helias Cross Country Team who stood along the course directing runners and cheering them on as well as their help at the finish line!
Elisa Brenneke ’98, Lindsey Brondel Pitts ’00, Sherry Mariea and Paul Dupuis '86 were extremely helpful with the set up of the course and registration the morning of the event.
Kim Conrad and her staff with Fresh Ideas were very kind to donate the bagels, muffins, cream cheese and assorted juices for the race. Bill Williams ’79 generously donated fresh fruit for the breakfast following the event. Thank you Joel Mietzner of Ecowater Systems-Miracle Water for the bottled water.
To award the winners of the 5K, we were fortunate to receive gift cards to give as prizes from the following individuals: Rich and Colleen Burkemper (Kate & Ally’s NY Pizzaria), Nick DeSimone (Kwik Kar Wash & Detail), Laura Payne ’83 (Midwest Advertising Specialties Inc), Bruce Ring ’79 (Zestos South) and David ’77 and Steve ’72 Ruprecht (McDonalds Restaurants).
Thanks to everyone for making our first Helias Homecoming 5K Run/Walk a fun and successful event. We sincerely appreciate your partnership! See you next year!!
