Helias Foundation

Greetings {FIRST_NAME},

Summer 2008

Welcome to the "Summer Issue" of the E-Sader. Though you may not be able to read this in the sun (unless of course you print it off), we hope that the articles and "links" keep you well-informed on Helias until August, when the next E-Sader will come out.

Make sure and visit the new Foundation website. We are very excited to have a presence on the Web and better opportunity to reach more alumni and friends.  Let us know what you think...and have a relaxing summer!

How Helias Became "Crusaders"Crusader smaller websize.JPG

By Brandon Martin '98

Helias Hawks? Helias Pioneers? Helias Swifts? These were but a few of the mascots suggested in those early days of the school. In 1956, a few votes cast differently could have resulted in Helias students and supporters wearing shirts with swift runners or soaring raptors; however, Crusaders prevailed.

The recently deceased and life-long supporter of Helias, Jim Delong, '59, is to be thanked for entering Crusaders into the mascot contest.

With more than 250 mascot possibilities submitted by the student body, members of the religious as well as members of the Helias community voted.  One point was given for first preference, two for second, etc. Crusader became the chosen mascot for Helias beating Knights by only two points. The results were Crusaders, 29 points; Knights, 31; Trojans, 50; Pioneers, 51; Squires, 54; Spartans, 55; Hawks, 58; and Swifts, 68.

Delong provided Crusaders because he understood Father Helias to be a crusader for Catholic education.

Awarded five dollars for his submission, Delong was joyous about the winnings because that was a lot of money back then. When asked what Jim Delong's favorite purchase with those five dollars was, Jim's son, Tony Delong, said, "Other than investing, he would have spent it on books; he enjoyed expanding his knowledge and exercising that knowledge in his daily life and regularly with the people around him."

When asked what Jim Delong crusaded for in his life, Tony Delong said, "Jim was hard-core champion for Helias. Ever since I was a kid, he said ‘Follow the golden rule.' How he treated people was his rule for life. He truly believed in Helias and how the school prepared people for life."

For preventing Helias students from being labeled Hawks, or worse, thank you again Jim Delong.

Helias Hosts

By Brandon Martin '98

Two exchange students attended Helias this last school year, one German girl (Petra Baum) and one Colombian boy. They received a good education, contributed in sports and extracurricular activities, and just plain enjoyed Helias; however, the rest of the student body enjoyed them and learned from them as well.

cropped Ricardo and the Dermody Boys.jpgRicardo Martinez, the Colombian boy who attended Helias this year, was hosted by Kevin and Theresa Dermody, who have four boys, two currently at Helias. When asked if her family had any worries before they decided to welcome Martinez, Theresa Dermody said, "We are a baptism by fire kinda crowd. We decided to host one student on Sunday and Ricardo was here by the following Friday. Just left things in the Boss's hands."

When asked how her boys got along with Martinez, Dermody noted, "Wonderfully!!! It is due to the boys, particularly Brian, for taking him under their wing that made this experience so easy for Big Kevin and me. He was fortunate to have a few days of soccer practice before school started. The team could have been resentful that someone was taking their playing time, but instead the day he scored his first goal, they all cheered! His biggest challenge the first few days of school was trying to remember the names of everyone who said hello to him and slapped him on the back in the halls! I don't think he ever felt like a stranger at Helias."

Dermody said that for Martinez, "Coming from a city with a population of 3,000,000 to living on a farm was a totally different experience. Chasing buffalo, riding ATV's, washing dishes, playing fugitive, snow and cold were all new and exciting. He overcame all the challenges that came his way!"

"His desire to learn was a wonderful influence to have. It took a lot of courage to pack your bags, leave home, family and friends to go to a complete stranger's house for nine months," Dermody said, when inquired about what Martinez brought out in her family.

Dermody would advise other families who are considering hosting an exchange student to, "Have your children involved in the decision process, they are the ones who will be the most affected. Look at the interests of the student and your family. Bonding is so much easier when you have something in common to share from the beginning. In our case, it was soccer, soccer, and more soccer. Realize that the majority of students come from a financially secure background. Try to look at living with your family through their eyes (sometimes that exercise isn't pretty either) and have FUN!"

For the 2008-2009 school year, Helias hopes to have six exchange students. So far one Taiwanese and one Chinese girl have been placed in host families, but four Mexican boys from Regis High School in Hermosillo, Mexico, still need host families.

To those interested in helping the education process of Helias' student body by hosting an exchange student, please contact Helias President Didier Aur at (573) 635-6139.

Helias Foundation Fund Drive is at 65% of goal!

Does the end of summer get here so fast because we're having fun or because it signifies the end of the Helias Foundation Drive? Believe it or not, the drive that seems as though just got started is winding down to the final weeks. We've now collected $172,250 or 65% of our $265,000 goal. The drive is critical to helping Helias High School meet it's financial obligations throughout the year. We need your help! If you haven't made your contribution, please do so today! The drive ends on August 31. Donations received before August 31 will be listed in the next Foundation newsletter(mailed fall 2008).  Drive chair Roger Dudenhoeffer and vice chair Tina Rost Hoey '87 are working harder than ever to help meet the $265,000 goal-but they cannot do it without you!

Remember the new "Class Challenges" for this year:  the class with the highest percentage of participation will earn distinction as Helias Class of the Year (Note:  the Class of 2008 is currently in the lead!) and the class that generates the highest total revenue will win the Jim Rackers Award.  To see which class is ahead, you can watch the Running Totals on the Foundation website.

How can you help?  Consider being the Class Captain for your class...we will make it easy for you and provide you with support:  contact information, even sample letters and phone scripts for your classmates.  Help YOUR class make a good showing in this year's drive!!  Contact Marti Dupuis to get involved.

Thank you for all your past support and willingness to contribute when asked.  Your contributions really DO make a difference in the lives of current and future Helias students.  THANK YOU!

Hitting The Helias Hallways

For the month of May, the halls of Helias were quieter than most monthes with preparation for finals and finals taking place. For those curious about what was going on in the classrooms, take a gander!

Some Final Thoughts

As this is our last edition for the 2007-2008 school year, I would like to thank a few people who have been instrumental in getting this idea of an online newsletter off the ground.

Tom Stegeman '86 was THE ONE person who had the knowledge and volunteered to show me the ins and outs of producing this newsletter.  He introduced me to the website we use to produce and distribute the E-Sader and then sat with me and actually taught me what to do. THANK YOU Tom, of Mike Kehoe Auto Groupfor taking time from your days to make the E-Sader a reality.

Helias art teacher Mark Friggle designed the title bars for each of our publications.  Mark never has a shortage of ideas and is always willing to help.   He also put a new spin on the Foundation "H block" logo we use.  THANKS MARK!

Our behind the scenes team of English-teacher-editors throughout the year has included Pat Seifert, Nancy West, and Denise Noonan.  Thanks for all your time and red ink!

Helias President Didier Aur has been supportive of the entire project from the beginning and is always the first one to tell us "Good job."

Foundation Assistant Kay Morton simply does it all. Thanks for all your suggestions and encouragement along the way.

Certainly, last but not least, first year teacher Brandon Martin '98 has been with the E-Sader from the very beginning.  Brandon develops story ideas, conducts interviews, takes pictures, and writes the articles. Thanks for all your work. The E-Sader wouldn't have happened without you!
