 Alumni Spotlight

Thomas Rost, '97
by Brandon Martin '98

A little over ten years ago, Thomas Rost packed the Helias field house with fans eager to be entertained by his control of the basketball. The diversity and skill of his shots, the ball movement, his poise under pressure, and his superior presence on the court, made watching the game fun and flavorful. Rost made the swish seem simple.

Today, Rost, pictured second from left, has traded the rotation of the round ball for the tossing of the pizza-pie dough. Yes, Rost has opened the first Arris' Pizza in Columbia, Missouri, in the new Red Oaks Plaza by Kohl's off the AC exit, and is ecstatic to be a pizza restaurant franchisee.

In business for two months, I asked Rost how he liked the long hours of the restaurant business and having little or no social life. "I work a hundred hours a week and don't mind the hours. Owning a restaurant is kind of a social life. You meet a lot of people, socialize a lot."

Rost was known for socializing in high school and said, "I remember Father Doyle's class; I got in trouble a lot for mimicking his Irish accent and got enough detentions."The teacher that Rost remembered for more than his uniqueness was Brother Steven. "He made English class fun and interesting, which I know is hard to do, as dry as the subject is. His class was the best English class I ever had. I would like to thank him for the expanded vocabulary. I will never forget words like garner."Since graduating high school, Rost has garnered much success.

In 2001, he received his Bachelor's of Science degree in Business Management from Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas, where he was on a full-ride basketball scholarship. After college he became a golf caddy and managed Joel Kribel, the number one amateur of the world, at one time, in the PGA. And in 2003, he owned a painting company in Denver, Colorado.

Moving back to Mid-Missouri in 2004, he started working at the original Arris' Pizza in Jefferson City, Missouri, and helped the franchise at the Lake of the Ozarks, to see if this was a business venture that he'd like to pursue.

Ten years after graduation, Rost didn't figure he'd be where he's at today, "I had no idea I'd be doing this-some things just sort of happen. I thought I might be a lawyer, like my dad."

Over the last two months, college students have crowded Rost's pizza house to enjoy the authentic Greek pizza in an atmosphere that is familiar-the Greek landscape artwork on the walls, the aroma of a hot Arris' pizza-and yet new, and consistent with the Columbia appeal-recycled paper bar top, college students waiting and bussing the restaurant while others are devouring the square shaped pizza slices and enjoying their classmates' conversation.

Thomas Rost-true success-at and after-and always with Helias!

marti new.JPGNew View from the Foundation Office
by Marti Dupuis

I realize the shoes of Jim Rackers can never be filled. I am reminded of this each day as I glance out my office window and see the James L. Rackers Fieldhouse.  However, last summer I accepted his former position with great enthusiasm and anticipation.

After attending the University of Missouri-Columbia on a volleyball scholarship, I met my husband Paul (Helias '86) at a tournament in Columbia; thus, my Helias connection had begun.  I met Mr. Rackers shortly after that when Paul and I were set to coach the Helias volleyball team.  Quickly I learned that no new blood became staff without getting the approval of Mr. Rackers. I guess I passed the test, because I was ultimately okayed and helped with the next season or two with the Crusaders.

Fifteen years later, after teaching in various schools and most recently working as Development Director for my alma mater Immaculata High School in Leavenworth, Kansas, I find myself back in Mid-Missouri.  I am most honored to be given the opportunity to be the new Executive Director of the Helias Foundation.  My role is to support the efforts of the Helias Foundation as well as create new opportunities and events that support Helias High School.

There is so much good at Helias, and I am ready to begin doing my part to ensure that this tradition of excellence continues.  Two of my primary goals include the establishment of an Alumni Association and Hall of Fame for Helias High School.  (See below for details.)

I am truly happy to make Jefferson City my new home.  I have felt so welcomed here at Helias, yet I know there are many more connections to make.

Most importantly, I look forward to working with you in future endeavors to continue the strong tradition of successes Mr. Rackers established for the Helias family!

friggle aur art.gifTractor-Trailer Load of a Donation
by Brandon Martin '98

Helias students have been given a unique donation: a semi-trailer load of art supplies from a monastery in Memphis. Students now have access to 1500-2000 ceramic molds, to cast anything from simple Christmas ornaments to the famous Virgin Mary statues.

Along with the ceramic molds there are three new kilns, a slip table and thousands of acrylic paints. Also, there are numerous art tables, sculpting tools, pottery wheels, clay and porcelain slip, and shelves. Mark Friggle, Helias Art Teacher, appraised the gift at around fifty thousand dollars.

Sister Marguerite, Sister Mary Helen Kelly, and the Monastery of Saint Clare, Memphis, Tennessee, are the ones to thank for this donation. Sister Mary Helen Kelly recently passed away, and Sr. Marguerite donated the art supplies to Didier Aur and Helias. For thirty plus years Sr. Kelly sold her art to help support the monastery. From now on, the monastery will sustain solely off donations.

Didier Aur, Mark Friggle, and I packed the plaster molds, finished art pieces, and art supplies in boxes. What took us three days and two nights to prepare, took only four hours for the Christian Brothers High School football team to load onto a tractor-trailer.  The week before school started, the Helias soccer, football, and softball teams worked thirty-minute shifts moving these molds and supplies to the boiler room.

Thank you, Sister Marguerite, Sister Mary Helen, and all the Poor Clare Nuns of the Monastery of Saint Clare, Memphis, Tennessee!

 'Sader Standouts

Alex Kelley 4th at National FBLA contest!

By Margaret Shimkus, Helias Teacher and FBLA Sponsor

FBLA-PBL_logo.jpg

Last summer's theme for FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) National Leadership Conference was "your ticket to the future."  For FBLA standout Alex Kelley it certainly is his ticket.  FBLA, the largest and oldest student business organization celebrated 65 years of excellence in Chicago Illinois.  With 250,000 members nation wide and over 7,000 students at the national contest held at University of Illinois-Chicago, Alex Kelley placed fourth in business calculations.  To receive his ticket to nationals, Alex placed first at the district level in February to qualify for the state competition in April.  He then placed second at state, where top two in written test qualify for nationals.  He took the test for nationals in June at the University of Illinois-Chicago and scored high enough for his scholarship and fourth place national title.  Helias has had success in FBLA before.  The last national qualifier, Christopher Rehagen placed seventh in the same event in 2004 at Denver, CO.  Alex Kelley graduated from Helias in May 2007 and is now studying at the University of Oklahoma.

5 Crusaders in Top 100 of Physics Contest

AAPT.jpg

For the second year Helias physics students participated in the American Association of Physics Teachers physics photo contest.  High school students from around the world were challenged to submit a photo illustrating a physics concept. The winners were chosen in July at the 2007 AAPT Summer Meeting in Greensboro, NC. The students were required to take the photo themselves and to write a summary of the physics occurring in the photo. Students' photos were entered in one of two categories, and were judged on the quality of the photo and the accuracy of the physics in the explanation that accompanied the photograph.

5 Helias students placed in the top 100 and received special recognition for their entries.  All from the class of 2007, the students who placed in the top 5 are:  Rebecca Sandbothe, Anna Covert, Kurt Krautmann, Jill Wildhaber, Josh Duncan.

Helias Physics teacher Matt Zeitz has plans to hang these noteworthy entries on his Physics "Wall of Fame."
