Kurt Daw named dean of College of Creative Arts

Photo of Kurt Daw, dean

The University has appointed Daw after a national search. He comes to SF State from State University of New York, New Paltz, where he was dean of the School of Fine and Performing Arts since 2003. “In Kurt Daw, we have found an exceptional individual to whom we can entrust one of SF State’s greatest resources — its wide-ranging and nationally recognized creative arts programs,” SF State President Robert A. Corrigan said.

Jassen Todorov named director of School of Music and Dance

Todorov, a violinist, now leads one of the longest-standing and most diverse performing arts programs in Northern California. Dubbed “a player to watch” by music journal The Strad in 2001, Todorov has played and taught master classes throughout Europe, Australia, Asia and the U.S. and garnered much acclaim for his intense, original musicianship. He joined the SF State faculty in 2003.

Cinema alums garner Emmy nods

Two Cinema alumni are among the many nominees for the 2008 News and Documentary Emmy Awards, scheduled for Aug. 29 in New York. Janelle Rodriguez, a senior producer at CNN, is part of the team on “The Situation Room” nominated in the Outstanding Live Coverage of a Breaking News Story (Long Form) category for a piece on slain Pakistan leader Benazir Bhutto.

Near perfection in alum’s ‘Uncle Vanya’

Alumna Timothy Near will step down as artistic director of the San Jose Repertory Theatre at the end of the season, but she is keeping busy in the stage world. She is director of a production of “Uncle Vanya” that the San Francisco Chronicle has called “engrossing,” “sweet” and “poignant.”

Alum, faculty member John Calloway named to S.F. Arts Commission

John Calloway

Mayor Gavin Newsom appointed John Calloway, a faculty member and alumnus of the School of Music and Dance, to the San Francisco Arts Commission earlier this month.

Calloway (M.A., Music Education, ’03) is a renowned flutist, performing across the country and alongside legendary musicians like Cuban bassist Israel “Cachao” López. Calloway’s recording credits as a performer and composer include last year’s solo album “The Code” and collaborations with John Santos, Jesus Diaz and Omar Sosa. He travels to Cuba frequently as program coordinator for PlazaCuba, an arts organization that offers courses with the National School of the Arts in Havana.

At SF State, Calloway directs the Afro-Cuban Jazz Ensemble and teaches courses in Latin American music. Founded in 1999, the ensemble is believed to be the only of its kind at a college on the West Coast. But more than its uniqueness and music distinguish the Afro-Cuban Jazz Ensemble. “It’s the culture and the social aspects to this music that you might not find in other places,” he said.
