Photo: Kurt Daw, dean of the College of Creative Arts.Welcome to San Francisco State, a world-class university in a world-class city. San Francisco, in fact, is considered the most creative city in the U.S. You chose the right place.
More than ever, innovation, imagination and creativity are thriving and in high demand, particularly given the challenges we face today. No matter your major, creativity is an integral part of the university experience, giving you and edge in the classroom, in the studio or on stage and in the professional realm. It seems that not a day goes by without SF State alumni contributions to arts and popular culture coming to our attention. So many Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony nominees attended SF State—people like Danny Glover, Annette Bening, Kent Nagano, Jeffrey Tambor, Delroy Lindo, Alex Borstein and Paul Gemignani. Will you be the next?
Jump into the creative life of SF State at Welcome Days. The College of Creative Arts will host an open house and dessert reception from 1 to 2 p.m. Aug. 21 in Room 153 of the Creative Arts Building, where you can meet new friends and join student groups.
I will also give a talk on Aug. 20 at 1:45 p.m., discussing how creativity gives you the competitive edge in any field. This takes place in the Little Theatre in the Creative Arts Building and promises to be a fascinating, engaging discussion.
Make sure to stop by the Martin Wong Gallery, in the Fine Arts Building. The new exhibit, ComuniCarte, showcases community art from El Salvador and Costa Rica, created with SF State students this summer. The free exhibit is open weekdays noon–4 p.m. from Aug. 20 to Sept. 9.
Continue to tap into your creative potential all year long. You already receive our E-Lert, but we also invite you to visit our Web site, join our Facebook fan page and follow us on Twitter.
I look forward to meeting you this fall.
Sincerely,

Kurt Daw
