Morrison Artists Chamber Music Series: Quartet New Generation

To kick off the 55th season of San Francisco’s longest running chamber music concert series, the recorder collective Quartet New Generation performs contemporary works juxtaposed with early music by Bach, Bruckner, de Rore and Dowland. McKenna Theatre, Creative Arts building.

Mounting technological, economic and moral pressures emerge in a mechanized society, creating a burning anxiety nationwide. Something has to give. The intense and physical production, directed by alumnus Mark Jackson, makes parallels between 2008 and the 1928 setting of Sophie Treadwell’s expressionist play. Little Theatre, Creative Arts building.

DAI faculty member wins teaching award

George_VanceMartin Linder was honored with SF State’s Sarlo Excellence in Teaching Award on Aug. 25. The $5,000 award is sponsored by the Sarlo Foundation of the Jewish Community Endowment Fund, honoring a professor who has demonstrated individual, public and institutional respect for the art of teaching.

Creative Arts welcomes new faculty

George_VanceSeven tenure-track faculty members joined SF State’s College of Creative Arts this fall, with wide-ranging expertise in painting, dance, gaming, screenwriting and graphic design.

Vance George joins Music faculty

George_VanceThe director emeritus of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus is named conductor of the SF State Chamber Singers, the top choir in the School of Music and Dance. “The students are very bright, eager and experienced,” said George, a Chorus America Lifetime Achievement Award winner. “I am delighted when I see them light up, overwhelmed by the beauty of the music.”

SF State launches quartet fellowship

Alexander String Quartet In its first international competition for Emerging Professional String Quartets, the International Center for the Arts will present a winning one-year fellowship residency at SF State. The Alexander String Quartet, SF State quartet-in-residence, will mentor the winning group.

Gutmann's studentsThe late Art Professor John Gutmann founded the creative photography program at SF State as the first curriculum in the U.S. to teach photography as fine art, in 1946 — the same year Ansel Adams and Minor White established one of the nation’s first fine art photography departments, at the San Francisco Art Institute.
