Concert
After 25 years playing at nearly every major concert hall, this violin-piano-clarinet trio visits SF State. The Boston Globe writes: “No praise can be too high...for the three hypervirtuosos.” Works by Milhaud, Saint-Saëns, Poulenc and Stravinsky—all composers with French connections.
Pre-concert talk: Join composer and Professor Ronald Caltabiano at 2pm for a discussion of the Kavafian-Schub-Shifrin Trio and the music to be performed.
Theatre
Fall in love again, just like Olivia. This beloved comedy displays Shakespeare’s unparalleled ability to take audiences to the heart of what it means to be human. His characters endure the universal rite of passage—falling in deep, helpless, turbulent love.
Pre-show talk: Join Theatre Arts Professor William Peters, English Professor Bruce Avery and College of Creative Arts Dean Kurt Daw on Thursday, November 12, at 7pm for a discussion of Shakespeare and Twelfth Night.
Exhibition
This 20th annual juried showcase features new student art in many media, plus selections from the University’s collection of watercolor and oil paintings by Leo D. Stillwell Jr.
Opening reception: Join student artists and Art Department faculty on Thursday, November 10, 4–6pm.
News
Student Crescent Diamond has won a Jacob K. Javits Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Education. The $30,000 award helps fund her graduate studies and creative projects. She is one of 72 Javits fellowship winners this year, selected from 764 applicants. Among the 28 universities represented among this year’s winners, SF State is the only CSU campus.
The Alexander String Quartet recently released a nine-CD set of the complete string quartets by Beethoven. “This set is one of the very finest available....unquestionably one of my ‘Records of the Year’ for 2009,” writes Michael Cookson for MusicWeb. Celebrating 20 years on faculty, the Alexander performs a Morrison Artists Series concert Dec. 13, closing the show with a composition from the CD set.
SF State’s student-run television news broadcasts and radio station give you the scoop and the tunes in more ways than ever. A simple online stream is old news, as “State of Events” and KSFS radio utilize Twitter, iTunes and more.
Dig This
SF State is home to 30-plus pieces of public art, providing the campus community a respite from the bustle of life and many opportunities to reflect.
Murals inside and outside the Student Center celebrate the University’s cultural diversity, including the Filipino, Asian and Pacific Islander, Palestinian and Latino communities. Ruth Asawa’s Garden of Remembrance honors former Japanese American students forced to live in World War II internment camps. Two works by modernist sculptor Benjamin Bufano live on campus. Fern fronds inform the benches by the Fine Arts Building, designed by Dan Stingle.
The Fine Arts Gallery and Cesar Chavez Student Center Gallery have created a self-guided campus art tour, taking a walk through the works by notable artists, alumni and students, honoring the vibrant and interesting elements they have added to the campus experience.
