OREGON TRAFFIC ACCIDENT REPORTING REQUIREMENTS

By: AJ (Anne Johnson)

Accident.jpgSpring is upon us and summer is fast approaching.  This traditionally means more travel and unfortunately an increase in auto claims.

Everyone needs to be aware that any driver involved in an accident that results in any of the following is required by the DMV to file an "Oregon Traffic Accident and Insurance Report" form #735-32 (5-07).

  • Damage to your vehicle over $1,500
  • Injury (no matter how minor)
  • Death
  • Damage to any one person’s property over $1,500
  • Any vehicle involved in an accident and is towed from the scene as a result of damages

These are required to be filed within 72 hours of the accident.  If this is not possible, the report should be filed as soon as possible. Failure to do so may result in the suspension of your driving privileges. If an accident involves a commercial motor vehicle (meeting certain qualifing criteria) a separate report called a  “Motor Carrier Crash Report “ form # 735-9229 needs to be filed within 30 days whenever the following applies.

  • Fatality
  • Injury requiring treatment away from the scene
  • Any vehicle involved in an accident and is towed from the scene as a result of damages
These reports may be obtained at any DMV office or online at www.odot.state.or.us/forms/dmv/32.pdf

NOTE : If you are involved in an accident in another State, they all have their own reporting requirements and forms, so you should be checking a DMV office within the applicable State or online for their requirements.

Adding certain features to your home could reduce your insurance premiums

Here are a few to consider:

• Install a home security system.  You'll gain peace of mind too.

• Use concrete siding on your home to lower fire risk

• Install deadbolt locks on exterior doors.  It's one of the simplest ways to reduce risk of break-ins.

• Mount Fire Extinguishers in your kitchen, garage and basement - common sites for household fires.

• Replace / Add smoke alarms.  It is also recommended that you place one in every bedroom in addition to common living areas

• Include an automatic sprinkler system in your home for top-of-the-line fire protection.

BONUS: Home Projects that can decrease chances of liability:

Repair cracked sidewalks and uneven driveways – often culprits for trips and falls.  SMART TIP: Ask about Personal Umbrella/Excess Policies.

Add motion-detector outdoor lights to deter break-ins.  A well-lit entry also helps prevent accident, reducing potential to a liability claim.

Did you Know?

By Robert Paskins

In 1998, Sony accidentally sold 700,000 camcorders that had the technology to see through people's clothes. These camcorders had a night vision setting and with the proper lighting and setting they could see though a person's clothes.

In 1982, a cactus in Phoenix, Arizona killed a man. David Grundman fired two shotgun blasts at a giant saguaro cactus that ended up falling on top of him.
