Welcome to the November edition of News from Sue Henry

This month we ask the thought provoking question "What have you achieved?" we review the book "Screw it Let's Do It - Lessons in Life" by Richard Branson and announce the details for our annual Christmas function and launch our new range of business accessories.

What have you achieved?

I recently attended a State Award ceremony for the Telstra Business Woman of the Year Awards and it struck me while I was there how much business owners do not take the time to stop and reflect on what they have achieved in their businesses and careers. Each of the award winners at the function made a reference to or a comment that going through the process of putting their award submission together made them realise exactly what they had achieved and far they had come.

On my way home I started to think about the things I have achieved in my business and how far I had come since commencing and shared these thoughts with some other business owners the more we talked the more we identified common things with award winners here are the top three factors we discovered.

1. Being clear on your future direction and what you want is key

Most achievements and exceptional sales results come from being crystal clear and knowing exactly what it is you want. Knowing exactly what you want assists in keeping you on track and focussed on the most critical tasks and activities to do in order to move you to achieving your goals. Every time poor results have been present so have distractions, uncertainty and lack of clear direction. Do a quick check with your direction do you know exactly what you are aiming for?

2. Challenges, mistakes and setbacks are part of the process

Everyone makes mistakes, take a good look around I do not know one single business owner who has not made a mistake or had a set back of some description. Accept that it is part of owning and running a business. The one important factor that makes a difference between success and continuing to make mistakes is to ensure that you learn from them. Do not skip past the mistakes quickly, think them through to see what you can learn from them and most importantly apply what you have discovered and make the changes (even the ones that feel out of your comfort zone). I know many of you have heard me say this before, I use the simple formula What Worked? What Didn't and How Can I Improve? Try it today think about the last set back you had.. and what you did about it?

3. Passion and self belief sells

If you really believe in yourself, your products, your services and what you are aiming for it propels you towards continually achieving results. Every person that I have spoken to about awards and achievements has consistently advised that self belief and passion for what you do sells.  One business owner used the analogy "it's like smiling, you walk down the street and smile at someone and they'll smile back, business is the same love it and it will love you back".

Take Action

Take action today with one of these ideas

1. Schedule 1 hour into your diary this week to review what you have achieved, use these questions to get you started.
What are the stand out things I have achieved or what am I most proud of?
What are some of the challenges I have faced & how did I overcome them?
What advice would I give someone new starting up in business?
How has my business impacted the economy?
Who do I need to acknowledge and thank for assisting me?
What exciting things does the future hold for my business?

2. Share your findings with a business buddy, friend, coach or mentor

3. Give yourself an award or reward after all you deserve it look at what you have achieved!

Book Review - Screw it Lets Do it- Lessons in Life by Richard Branson

I loved this book it was easy to read, succint and to the point. It has some great ideas and I felt as though I had Richard Branson sitting in front of me sharing his billion dollar experiences. Ater reading the book I felt a sense of renewed vigour for my goals and business.

It is a small and simple book that can be read quickly. I recommend that you buy the book (simply click on the book image) and implement the strategies suggested and accelerate your business.
