Impact of the Financial Crisis on New PPI Projects
- Update 5
The PPIAF/World Bank Private Participation in Infrastructure (PPI) Project Database team quarterly assesses the short-term impact of the financial crisis on infrastructure projects with private participation in developing countries. Investments grew by 22% in the third quarter of 2009 compared with the same quarter in 2008, cumulating a 10% growth in the first three quarters of 2009 compared with the same period of 2008. Testing Infrastructure Regulation in Theory and Practice in Vanuatu
Does the rationale for utility regulation hold regardless of the scale and the available resources of a country? How, and in what form, to create a regulatory authority in an environment without tradition of utility regulation? Even more importantly, once created, how to operate the new institution, develop its credibility and interact with consumers and other stakeholders? In 2008, Vanuatu established the Utilities Regulatory Authority (URA), benefitting from a substantial PPIAF grant. Learn more.

Infrastructure Development, PPPs, and Climate Change: The Future Research Agenda
Two dominant themes permeated a conference, cosponsored by PPIAF, held in Toulouse, France. Participants analyzed the relationship between climate change and infrastructure development, and the economics and policy of public-private partnerships (PPPs) and regulation. They exchanged ideas and insight on the future research agenda, and how to stimulate more research on these topics. Learn more.

A Future Forum on Infrastructure Regulation in MENA?
PPIAF provided funding for the organization of a conference on infrastructure reform and regulation in Amman, Jordan. PPIAF also funded the preparation of a report whose objectives were to assess the state of infrastructure development in the MENA region; evaluate reform progress and key challenges; and identify options for the establishment of a regional forum on infrastructure regulation.
