Shorezone Vote Slated for September

pier and boats_web.JPGThe Shorezone plan has been "in the works" for more than twenty years and for the past year, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency has repeatedly announced that it is close to being finalized.  The TRPA Executive Director now says that he plans to bring it to the Governing Board for a vote in September.  Thanks to all of you who have submitted comments throughout the process.

The most recent version of the plan that has been released to the public includes additional build-out potential of 138 piers, 235 boat slips, six boat launching ramps, and thousands of buoys.  Of significant concern, however, is the total number of buoys to be allowed under the proposal -- a staggering 6,316, which includes as much as 4,000 more buoys than are legally permitted on the Lake right now!  The TRPA still does not know how many buoys on the Lake are illegal or unauthorized.

You can still submit comments on TRPA's proposal by clicking here.  In addition, please consider attending the hearing on either September 24th or 25th.  We advise you to check the TRPA's website as the date approaches, as the Shorezone vote is subject to change.

Watershed Group Tours Potential Restoration Sites
UTR_Tour_2008.jpg

In June and July, the Upper Truckee River Watershed Stewardship Group coordinated a number of tours to highlight potential river restoration projects.  Community members were given opportunities to visit reaches of the river along the Lake Tahoe Golf Course and Washoe Meadows State Park as well as the Sunset Stables project area.

During each tour, the Stewardship Group learned about how development and the straightening of the Upper Truckee River channel have impacted stream environment zones (SEZs) within the watershed.  State and federal agency representatives were on hand to discuss proposed restoration at each site and the benefits and challenges of each project.

On Wednesday, August 13th the Stewardship Group will be touring another proposed restoration site - the Upper Truckee River Marsh. All are welcome - please RSVP with Raina Patrocinio if you'd like to join the tour - 530-541-5388 or raina@keeptahoeblue.org.  Click here for more info on the UTR Watershed Stewardship Group.

The Upper Truckee River Watershed Stewardship Group (UTRWSG) is a project of the League to Save Lake Tahoe that dedicates itself to educating the community about issues within the watershed and encouraging community activism.
TRPA Board to Reconsider Kings Beach Decision

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will vote for a second time on the future of Kings Beach.  In the agency's first hearing of the Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project, the Governing Board voted against the option of a three-lane highway configuration.  However, Board member Steven Merrill requested that the agency take another look at the 3-lane alternative.  All but one Board member, Jim Galloway, voted to reconsider the previous decision.  Many board members noted that their decision to reconsider was based heavily on the fact that the Placer County Board of Supervisors voted to approve the 3-lane alternative at their July 22nd meeting.

The TRPA Governing Board will vote on the plan again as early as October.  Please check our website frequently for updated information.

The League supports the proposed three-lane roadway for its water quality benefits associated with a reduction in roadway area, slower traffic speeds, and increased areas for stormwater treatment opportunities.  In addition, the three-lane alternative will reduce automobile dependence by providing safe areas for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Thanks to all of you who sent comments supporting the 3-lane alternative!
