Dear Members and Friends,

lake with snow_web.JPG

With Lake Tahoe finally enjoying a blanket of snow, we hope you are staying warm and enjoying holiday preparations, and that you all have a chance to see Tahoe in its winter loveliness this year.

The League’s volunteer activists and staff are looking forward to the holiday break, as the past few months have been extraordinarily busy.  Now the time has come to celebrate with our families and friends . . . and of course to get outdoors and remind ourselves of what we are working to protect.

Lake Tahoe is one of the world’s natural marvels, and a place of joy, exhilaration, inspiration, and peace.  Our gratitude for the privilege of enjoying this spectacular place reinforces our determination to assure that our children and grandchildren will have the chance to enjoy it too.

Cheers and happy holidays to you all,

Rochelle Nason
Executive Director

League Receives Charity
     Navigator's Highest Rating

If you love Lake Tahoe, please take this opportunity to show your holiday spirit by making a year-end gift to the League.  There are several ways to support our work online whether it is through an individual donation, gift membership, or honorary/memorial donation.  We can also accept donations by phone or through the mail.

The League is very proud to announce that it has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for the second year in a row, which demonstrates our efficient and effective use of your donation dollars.

League Sues to Keep Tahoe Blue

pier and boats_web.JPGAs you may be aware, the League has filed a lawsuit in federal district court against the TRPA on its recently passed Shorezone Ordinance.  The ordinance will allow for an unprecedented level of shorezone development and dramatic increases in motorized boat traffic at Lake Tahoe, without a remediation program to adequately deal with the consequences that water pollution will have on Lake Tahoe's famously clear waters.  The League only employs litigation as a last resort to protect the lake, when all other efforts at negotiations have proven unsuccessful.  Not surprisingly, however, the TRPA is publicly misrepresenting our intentions.  Click here to read our recent opinion editorial explaining the decision to challenge the plan legally.

The issues with the Shorezone Ordinance include deferral and inadequacy of mitigation programs, boat pollution, excessive buoy placement, overcrowding, loss of scenic beauty, heightened risk of invasive species introduction, dramatic increases in noise, and TRPA’s continuing failure to achieve its mandated environmental goals. The League will continue to work hard to assure protection for Lake Tahoe’s natural resources.

       Group's Activities in 2009

The Upper Truckee River Watershed Stewardship Group is looking forward to the winter season.  On January 20th, the group will continue the Film Night Series with two films that both received accolades at past Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festivals: From the Ground Up: Managing the Salmon River Basin and Tales of the San Joaquin: A River Journey. Click here for more details.

We are also planning a snowshoe excursion to areas of the UTR watershed this winter season. Definitive plans have not yet been made, but keep your gloves and snowshoes close at hand and check our calendar often because this is an opportunity you will not want to miss.

In addition, the Stewardship Group will also host a number of activities in the spring – water quality monitoring begins again in March and our public Forum will be held in late spring.  No experience is required for the water quality monitoring, and the Forum will undoubtedly provide useful resources for those interested in what is happening in the watershed.  Please email Raina Patrocinio at raina@keeptahoeblue.org for more info.

The Upper Truckee River Watershed Stewardship Group (UTRWSG) is a project of the League to Save Lake Tahoe that dedicates itself to educating the community about issues within the watershed and encouraging community activism.

5 Things You Can Do This

Winter to KEEP TAHOE BLUE!

1)  winter cabin.jpgReplace your old wood stove

New wood stoves emit considerably less air pollution and may offer greater efficiency to warm your house than older models.  Check for EPA certified wood stoves -- or an even better alternative is to replace it with a gas insert.

2)  If you’re skiing at the resorts, take a shuttle instead of driving

Automobile use is one of the primary causes of pollution in the Tahoe Basin.  Almost all of the area resorts offer some type of shuttle.  Check the resorts’ websites for more info – Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Homewood, Northstar, Mt. Rose, Heavenly, Sierra, Kirkwood.

3)  Go cross country skiing or snowshoeing

Low-impact, non-motorized recreation provides a high quality experience that is best for Lake Tahoe!

4)  Reduce your carbon footprint

Climate change will have dramatic effects on Lake Tahoe’s environment.  Click here to go to the EPA’s website for a comprehensive list of steps you can take to reduce greenhouse gases.

5)  Get Involved with the League
Check our website often for updates on important issues, action alerts, volunteer opportunities, and event announcements.

Happy Holidays from the League!
