Sizzling Summer Fun!
After a dreary and damp June it looks like summer is finally here! Looking for some summer fun to get you through the dog days of summer? Then take a look at our August program and activity lineup. Along with the popular QII riverboat cruise, camping, canoeing and kayaking at Barton Cove, there is a full line up of summer activities for all ages and interests. How about the "Happy Valley Locavore", or a popular program repeat from last year, "Unlock the Mysteries of Canning"? Have you ever been Electrofishing with Mass Wildlife? Or how about a special evening program of hoop dancing and drumming to celebrate the river? Plan to attend the Third Annual Turners Falls Block Party, August 8th on the Avenue! Call now for reservations since we expect several of the programs to fill to capacity early. Don't forget that you can save 30% on your next visit to Northfield Mountain. Cruising on the Quinnetukut II The Quinnetukut II cruises on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from June 28th through October 18th. Cruise times are 11:00, 1:15, and 3:00 Join captain Steve Larivee and first mate Sarah Doyle for a delightful hour and a half interpreted cruise on the Connecticut River. The cruise offers insights to dinosaurs, glacial activities in the area, river use from prehistoric times to present, as well as an excellent stage for wildlife and bird sightings.
The Quinnetukut II is
an excellent activity for your out of town summer guests and visitors,
or a great way to spend some time on the river with family or friends. Plan to bring a
picnic lunch and eat it on board or enjoy the Riverview picnic area at
the departure site. The Quinnetukut II is a forty two foot United States Coast Guard documented vessel. It has a capacity of sixty passengers. The roof provides shade or protection from inclement weather. Make reservations and purchase your tickets at the Northfield Mountain Visitor Center. Once the Quinnetukut
II begins operation the entire Visitor Center and the upstairs exhibit
area will be open on Fridays Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 AM until
4:30 PM. On Wednesdays and Thursdays only the lounge and restroom facilities will be open. The building will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays
Upcoming Programs
Meggin Thwing Eastman will share her locavore experiences including "must have" plants for your garden. Too many tomatoes?, swamped by summer squash?, zick of zucchinis?, blasted by basil? I once planted two long rows of arugula, what do you do with that? Meggin can help you keep your garden in balance and help you to maximize your harvest through drying or freezing to preserve food to enjoy outside the regular growing season. Bring some local food and your favorite recipes to share and swap.

Join Pat Shearer and Alison Wahlstrom in the Northfield Trinitatiarian Church kitchen to can some blueberry jam and zucchini relish. Then go home with the skill and confidence to can foods in your own kitchen. Both Pat and Alison have years of canning experience so join them around the church stove for some canning tips, tricks and stories. This program sold out early last year so don't delay making reservations.

If you've never been electrofishing, don't miss this program!
Caleb Slater, MassWildlife Anadromous Fish Coordinator, and other biologists will be in the Mill River in Northfield performing a population census of young Atlantic salmon. Be a part of the scientific study and help measure fish, record data, and learn about the life cycle of this fascinating fish.

Just when you thought the summer was getting boring, along comes Water Dances, a public hoop dancing event to celebrate the fresh waters of western Massachusetts! This evening program uses LED hoops, dancing, and rhythmic drumming to help celebrate the water. Be a participant, pre-register, wear black and meet at sunset at Unity Park in Turners Falls, or just come to watch (no registration required) and enjoy this fabulous riverside event!
