Wine TipNot sure what wine will pair best with your Thanksgiving dinner? Here's my tip this year - don't worry about it at all and make your guests do all pairing for you!
Just open a bottle of red wine (or two) and a bottle of white wine (or two) - maybe add in a rose or blush depending on how many people are coming - and let your guests decide for themselves what pairs best with which dish.
This is a great way to spur conversation during the meal and you'd be surprised at how much everyone will enjoy experimenting back and forth.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Katie,
I say this every year, and I just can't help it saying it again - November is my favorite month of the year. I love the cool (but not too cold yet) temperatures, the crunch of the leaves underfoot on morning hikes, fires in the fireplace (and outdoor firepits too), and my favorite holiday - Thanksgiving!
It is so great to slow down for a bit and catch up with our friends and family this month. On the thought of Thanksgiving, I need to let you know that the tasting room will be closed on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 25) so Clyde and I can enjoy dinner with our families.
But, we'll be open from 11am-6pm again on the 26th so if you have family in town or if you are just looking for a little getaway - please let this be your invitation to come on out to the winery!
I hope we'll see you here at Peaceful Bend soon. Until your next visit - have a wonderful month! Cheers, Katie
What's Going On?
November 5 - Cellar Party! Come celebrate the end of the harvest season with us this weekend. We'll have music by Brent Copeland and the ACP Band from 5-9pm. Dinner is first-come-first-served this year. For $8 you can enjoy jambalaya or mushroom chili, cornbread and a delicious dessert. A gift basket drawing and lots of give-aways will be held while the band is playing, so be sure to sign up for your chance to win up in the tasting room! Give us a call or drop us an email with any questions.
November 19 - I'll be at the Knights of Columbus Hall in DeSoto, MO from 7-9pm for the St. Rose of Lima wine tasting. For information about this event, please contact Carla Williams at 314-600-6822.
November 25 - Tasting room closed for Thanksgiving Day.
A Little Food With Your Wine?I don't know about you, but with the cooler temperatures, I start to crave soups, stews, and hearty dishes filled with comforting flavors. This mushroom soup fulfills that craving perfectly!
Mushroom Soup Ingredients - 1 Tbl. olive oil
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 3 strips bacon, chopped
- 1/2 cup flour
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 2 cups Harvest Mist
- 1 pound thinly sliced mushrooms - any variety
- 1 1/4 pounds potatoes, peeled and chopped into 1 inch cubes
- 1 Tbl. red wine vinegar
- 1/2 cup skim milk
- 1 Tbl. chopped fresh parsley
Directions - In a saucepan or dutch oven, saute onion and bacon in the olive oil over medium heat until onion is golden (2-3 minutes).
- Add mushrooms to the pan and continue to cook for another 8 minutes; stirring frequently.
- Add flour and cook for 1 minute, stir constantly.
- Stir in the broth, wine, potatoes, and vinegar. Simmer for 15 minutes or until the potatoes are tender.
- Add mixture to a food processor and puree (you may need to do this in batches) Add the pureed mixture back into the pan. Alternatively, you can use a handheld processor and puree the mixture right in the pan.
- Stir in the milk and gently reheat. Serve with a garnish of the fresh parsley.
Also, I dug around in the blog archives and found our favorite way to use up leftover Thanksgiving turkey - in Clyde's delicious turkey soup!
YMCA Strong Community CampaignI know we turned a lot of people on to the Forche Renault in September and October. Although the sale is over, we are still doing great things with this wine.
Did you know that the Forche is named after a creek in Potosi that feeds Sunnen Lake where Trout Lodge and Camp Lakewood are located? We love visiting Trout Lodge every year to relax and enjoy the outdoors - it's definitely an experience that everyone should enjoy! But since many people can't afford the stay, the Y has a scholarship fund set up to help those needy kids and families attend camp (or just have a chance to vacation as a family).
Clyde and I are happy to add to this effort with a special contribution - for every bottle of Forche Renault that you buy from Nov. 1, 2011 through Feb.15, 2012 we'll donate $1 to the YMCA of the Ozarks scholarship fund.
Last year we were able to contribute $173.00 to this great program, and I hope to beat that out of the water this year! So, I'll be making recipe cards up for the holidays and some special postcards with a few of the photos I've taken around the winery. Those of you who purchase a bottle will get your own copies of the recipes plus a postcard with each bottle of Forche that you buy as our way to say thanks. Each month will feature a different recipe card and postcard image.
And if you aren't a fan of Forche but would still like to help out, we'll have a donation jar out here at the winery. If you can contribute anything to this great scholarship, I'll happily hand over the postcard and recipe card of the month!
Thanks so much for any help you can give towards this wonderful organization!
