March 2011 Newsletter - Summer Edition |
Greetings After School professionals and advocates. Welcome to the “Summer" edition of the After School News. You may be wondering why we are putting out a summer themed newsletter in March. Aside from wanting to put this fierce winter behind us, we thought it would be a good idea to start thinking about summer events, opportunities and ideas to help you plan the most exciting summer programs possible. The warm weather is right around the corner. Soon the sounds of outdoor play and ice cream trucks will be a welcomed reality. So too will be the yearly excitement of summer programs in full swing! Happy reading.

Summer Learning Day is June 21! |
Now is the time to start planning for Summer
Learning Day, the national advocacy day for the summer learning field. Across the country, summer learning advocates take time the week of June 21 to highlight how they maintain and advance participants' academic growth, support working families, keep children safe and healthy, and send young people back to school ready to learn.
Summer Learning Day celebrations span a wide range of activities, from distributing fruit pops along with information about an upcoming summer program to organizing a read-a-long book distribution or a service learning project.

Mystic Seaport Offers Programs and Outreach |
By Sarah Cahill, Director of Education and Outreach, Mystic Seaport
Mystic Seaport is happy to share an opportunity for you and your programs. I bet many of you did not even know that Mystic Seaport does outreach programs where we come to you! AND we even have grant money available for those programs this year (yes, I did say grant money). Our outreach programs typically are one hour, one-time sessions (you can add another one-hour session on the same day at the same site, but these are not multiple week sessions just FYI). You can find out more about them at: www.mysticseaport.org/outreachprograms.
We also have grant funding available for guided educational tours here at the Seaport. You can find out more about those at www.mysticseaport.org/guidedtours.
Here’s how it works: if you are interested in having us come to do a program at your site, OR if you would like a guided tour here at the Seaport, send me an email (sarah.cahill@mysticseaport.org) explaining the percentage of students at your school/program who receive free/reduced price lunch. I will then take that percentage off of your total price.
Once pricing is determined, you can decide which program you would like and make “formal” reservations with our Central Reservations department: 860-572-5322 or reservations.desk@mysticseaport.org.
For more information on these and all of our educational programs, you can also download our full Education Brochure here.
