Steve's Notes

  Ugandan Utopiaplanting.jpg

According to Winston Churchill Uganda is the "Pearl of Africa," I would have to agree with him.  Uganda seems to have the best of everything this continent has to offer; stunning landscapes, endangered and exotic animals, beautiful and kind people, and all the sports an adventurer could want.  Uganda has been such a blessing both for me and DIG.

Our projects here are progressing better than expected and the people have been motivated beyond imagination. It has been a relief and a pleasure to work here and know that we don't have to hold someones hand and push them to try new things. They are invested and willing to take responsibility and make new ideas their own. I have been a lot of places in the world and this is one of my favorites.  Come for a visit and see for yourselves! Contact DIG if you're interested.

Patrick's Story

patrick.jpg
"When I was 26 I lost both my parents and my brother to AIDS.  Shortly after I found out that I too was infected.  I spent a lot of time trying to find my way.  So many others in my community were facing the same struggles as me and I didn't know what to do.  After awhile I decided to form the Bodondo Food Security for People Living with HIV/AIDS.  Today we have over 155 members working together to improve our food security, better educate our orphans, and provide home based care to those in most critical need.  DIG has come to our community and empowered us!  We had no idea that we could have created such a garden.  Thank you.  You are the first outside organization to give us such needed assistance and you have renewed our hope that we can survive if we work together." (Patrick is seen in the front right of the photo and lives in Southern Uganda)

Fresh from the Ground in Uganda

allenstone.jpg

DIG hit the ground running this past September with new projects in Uganda. Three projects have already been established:  Softpower/Allen Stone Clinic, Bodondo Food Security for People Living with HIV/AIDS, and The AIDS Support Organization (TASO). The Allen Stone garden is already producing cucumbers, okra, green beans, kale, salad, and numerous herbs and spices.  The Bodondo group are incredibly motivated and inspire us daily with their thirst for more knowledge and ideas.  They will soon be harvesting the fruits of their labor and tasting new veggies DIG is eager to introduce to their diet.  The latest garden at the TASO first harvest.jpgclinic will be our biggest project yet. The clinic itself supports over 7,000 people in the Jinja area. DIG will be recreating the TASO model in 10 TASO Community Initiative Center locations around the Jinja area.  We have much to do here so please consider DIG this holiday season as you are making your charitable gifts.

With the news of a crashing stock market fresh on everyones mind, we didn't have  high hopes for our Oct. fundraiser, but Birmingham pulled through and the event was twice as successful as last year.  Thank you  Birmingham, DIG is truly greatful.

Social Entrepreneurship

YAN.jpgRecently DIG's co-founder Sarah Koch had the honor of being awarded a year long YAN fellowship, an initiative started by the International Youth Foundation to connect and support the work of young social entrepreneurs around the world.  Early this Nov. Sarah attended a week long conference in DC where all 20 fellows were present. It was a great experience and one you can read more about  by clicking here.

moto.jpg

The cost of this motorbike was donated by an individual attending DIG's Birmingham Fundraiser.

Having it will allow DIG to set-up more Home Urban Gardens and implement  more facility gardens throughout southern Uganda.

Others contributed to the cost of local DIG facilitators, HUG projects, water harvesting systems, plastic, and a replacement computer for DIG that was recently stolen in while on site in Uganda.  Thank You!
