Conestoga 14's Guest of Honor is S. M.
Sterling, writer of alternate history novels. The Emberverse and
Draka series' are some of his more prominent work.
In the Emberverse books, the island of Nantucket is left behind when it became an
"Island in the Sea of Time". Electricity, high gas
pressures, and fast combustion (including explosives and gunpowder) no longer work in this world. The stories revolve
around how different survivors and groups of people adapt and live in
this changed environment.
“I read history obsessively;”
Sterling says in an interview for Locus Magazine, “it's been my
second great love, outside of science fiction, since I was a
teenager. And you always come across these points where things could
have happened one way or another, just as easily. ... Another appeal of alternate history is that everyone has
one of those turning points in their own life.”
Golden Tickets include an exclusive Gala Dinner with S.M. Stirling. To register, see below.
Artist Guest of Honor: Bob Eggleton
Our Art Guest of Honor will be Bob Eggleton.
Besides winning 9 Hugo awards and other honors for his art, Eggleton
has also worked as a conceptual illustrator for movies and the Star
Trek Experience ride in Las Vegas.
He works in science fiction and fantasy
art, saying also “I have a passion for landscape work, small
paintings and exploring the properties of paint.” Expanding on
this, he says in an i09.com interview, “My paintings deal with
scale.
"It's why I can paint a colossal space-scape and then, Godzilla or something like that. It's all about scale and size. Think about it. I like big things next to little things. The human race is a speck in the universe. But an ant colony is small next to us. Everything is relative to scale. I tend to like to try something different with each job I do.” He has created covers for speculative fiction, as well as illustrating books such as H.G. Wells' First Men on the Moon. Eggleton keeps a blog about his art, regularly updating with new paintings and artwork.
Conestoga Charity of Choice: Operation School Bell
This year Conestoga will be sponsoring the local chapter of Operation School Bell as its charity. This non-profit organization provides basic school clothing and accessories for children in need, taking care of the basics so they can thrive in school. They say, “No one wants to wear their poverty. For some children, attending school is painful and eventually many drop out. Others attend irregularly, or never enroll because their parents can't afford even the most basic items of school apparel.” The kit for each child includes a week's worth of clothing, a backpack, shoes, a dictionary, a toy and a book. The program allows the children to try on and select clothes themselves. This year's Charity Auction proceeds will go to Operation School Bell. Make Your Hotel Reservation Now
