Wu are You?

Frank Wu wins Illustrators of the FutureFrank Wu, "Three-Time Hugo Award Winner-Best Fan Artist & 13th Best Science Fiction Artist in the World!" might be best remembered at Conestoga for Guidolon the Giant Space Chicken animated short.  It was based on his story published in the 2005 anthology Daikaiju! Giant Monster Tales. The Director's Cut of this Conestoga Award-Winning film features on his home page -- and is in production again.  This time he promises Guidolon's name will be in the movie.

As an "Illustrator's of the Future" winner, it's no surprize that Wu's art has graced magazines (such as Strange Horizons, On Spec), book covers (like for Jerry Oltion, Mark Siegel), and illustrated a small-press publication of stories by Jay Lake, titled Greetings from Lake Wu.

But you probably don't know he has a Ph.D. in Bacteriology, and has authored four scientific papers on DNA replication.  We promise this will not be one of the panel discussions at the Con.  Feel free to ask him about it in the hall.

“When not creating stuff, Frank can be found hanging out with monks, hunting for mastodon bones in New Mexico and dinosaur bones and fish fossils in Wyoming, holding Laura Palmer's diary, riding in banana-shaped mopeds, touching art when the museum guards aren’t looking, searching for a river of molten lava to drop keys into, or walking the earth, meeting people, getting into adventures, you know, like Caine in Kung Fu.”

Your $35 weekend badge will get you into all events except the Gala Dinner with Robin Hobb.  The Gala Dinner is open to holders of Golden Tickets.

A Great Opening: Queen's Gambit

Queens Gambit Queen's Gambit specializes in Irish and Scottish traditional music...but the group has also proven themselves able to deliver some SF/F fun, too. Conestoga '07 was their first ever con, but they are favorites at Rennaissance Faires with good reason. (They know how to dress!)

Lovely fiddling and lively arrangements of good tunes are a particular feature of their music. Their show, though, with all the stories to be told of concerts past, and anecdotes on the music, is even more. The concert room will be a great place to be Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Capt'n Black & the Sea Dogges

Captain Black's Sea DogguesLong ago, in the time of Queen Elizabeth, brave men sailed the sea, exploring new frontiers in hopes of making their fortune in the New World. Those that were brave enough to face the dangers of uncharted seas and hostile natives earned the name Sea Dogges.

These Sea Dogges brave Ren Faires and bookstores, bringing their own brand of Privateering to those of us with ears to listen and wallets to open.  They'll be playing Friday night and Saturday afternoon for our pleasure.

Bedlam isn't just for Basketball

BedlamBards.JPGThe Bedlam Bards is a musical group with two-and-a-half members; that is to say, usually there's two of them, but sometimes there's three. The grey-haired guy with the guitar is Hawke, and the dark-haired fellow with the fiddle is Cedric. Cedric has joined us for previous Conestogas.  This time he's bringing his better half (third?).

When people ask what kind of music they play, the Bards often say Celtic, but after a beer will admit to playing "Renfolk Music," that unique blend of Celtic, English, Scandinavian, and American folk music mixed in with period tunes from the Renaissance and Middle Ages that rubs shoulders with the occasional incognito rock song at most Renaissance festivals.
