    August Training Event

    Creating a School Where ALL Kids Can Thrive is a great chance for school-based personnel — teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, parent liaisons, resource advocates, mental health professionals - to come together and think about the question, "How can we create an asset-rich school environment where all students can be successful?"

    Through group activities, small group discussions, video clips, and hands-on activities, participants will hear and learn from real-life examples of how to “put legs on the research” to build a stronger school community. Participants will be given the opportunity to take the information shared and connect it to their every day work.

    At this unique learning event, you’ll receive:

  • The latest research on positive youth development and how it connects to academic achievement;
  • An overview of the 40 Developmental Assets® – essential building blocks for healthy youth development – and other positive youth development frameworks;
  • Tips and tools for creating effective partnerships among school staff and with school partners;
  • Ideas for strengthening your relationships with young people – at home, at school and in the community; and
  • Opportunities to share with other educators in a fun, relaxed setting.

  • Great for individuals or for school teams!

This session includes a variety of interactive activities to help you connect the material provided to your specific program needs.

    You will receive tools, tips, and take-away items to help you:

    September Training Event 2

In Read Between the Lines - Literacy and Positive Youth Development, participants will learn how infusing the language and principles of positive youth development into literacy instruction can help strengthen relationships with students and parents to impact student success.

    This session will provide a host of ideas for creative activities, conversations and strategies for connecting literature to your goals for the cognitive, social and emotional development of children, while at the same time helping young people develop a love of reading! Explore award winning literature and learn how to design culturally and age-appropriate asset building activities to develop and reinforce reading skills.

    October Training Event

    Research continues to demonstrate the benefits of parent engagement in education and youth programs, but the realities of every day work with youth often lead us to the position of viewing parents as our adversaries rather than our allies. This workshop is designed for people who help to frame efforts to increase or strengthen parent engagement at the system, program, school, or classroom level — educators, program managers, family advocates, family liaisons, youth program providers, and leaders in parent organizations. The Power of Parents invites participants to consider how a positive youth development framework can assist you in building productive, positive relationships and partnerships with parents.

    During this session you will:

  • Explore what it would mean for parents to “really be engaged;”
  • Consider “meaningful engagement” from a parent’s perspective;
  • Learn simple tools to help you dispel the myths of parent engagement and learn how to see the power of parents as true partners in your school or organization;
  • Learn about successful parent engagement strategies in diverse communities across Colorado; and
  • Explore processes for building partnerships with parents by focusing on strengths.

  • When: October 20, 2009
    Time: 8:30-9am – Breakfast & Check In 9-12pm - Training
    Where: Quigg Newton Senior Center, 4430 Navajo St Denver, CO 80211
    Cost: $40 - Includes breakfast, training materials, and The Power of Parents publication

    November Training Event

    Engaging diverse youth and families is the goal, but effective strategies are often missing. Competency in working with diverse youth is a constant process of conversation and exploration, and the importance of this process is often overlooked. The Spirit of Culture provides an experiential learning environment in which participants explore not only their own cultural identity, but how culture impacts their daily work.

    As participants walk through a strength-based approach to cultural competency, you will learn from relevant examples of how cultural competence, when linked to youth development, can be effective in developing positive relationships with young people.

    In this session you will:

  • Explore individual and group cultural identity;
  • Link positive youth development and cultural competency to help move your work with young people to the next level;
  • Participate in experiential exercises designed to expand your knowledge base; and
  • Leave with lessons, insights, tips, and tools that you can apply in your community when you return.

  • The Spirit of Culture is great workshop for educators, after-school program staff, youth service providers, and community leaders.

    When: November 17, 2009
    Time: 8:30-9am – Breakfast & Check In 9-12pm - Training
    Where: Quigg Newton Senior Center, 4430 Navajo St Denver, CO 80211
    Cost: $40 - Includes breakfast, training materials, and The Spirit of Culture publication
