GLOBAL WASHINGTON DIRECTORY UNVEILED
GLOBAL WASHINGTON JOINED THE NECESSARY REVOLUTION
Over 30 partners joined Global Washington and the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce in listening to renowned author, MIT faculty member, and founder of the Society of Organizational Learning Peter Senge speak about his work and his new book, The Necessary Revolution: How Institutions and Individuals are Working Together to Create a Sustainable World. The book describes how global climate change has catalyzed organizations such as GE, DuPont, Nike, Coca-Cola, Oxfam and the World Wildlife Fund to usher in an era "beyond the bubble" that is profitable, strategically vital and dramatically reshaping the world. Peter led an engaging discussion on sustainability and was joined onstage by Sheri Flies, corporate counsel for Costco Corporation, who shared her own experience working with the Sustainable Food Laboratory (http://www.sustainablefoodlab.org/).To read more about Peter Senge and his new book, check out this Business Week article: http://www.businessweek.com/innovate/content/jun2008/id20080611_566195.htm. PROGRESS ON GLOBAL LEARNINGThe Global Washington Education Advisory Council (GWEAC) was formed in the fall of 2007. The Council consists of representatives from the University of Washington, Washington State University, Seattle University, Whitman College, Cascadia Community College and Walla Walla Community College. GWEAC developed the Global Learning Goals for Higher Education, available on our website (http://www.globalwa.org/research-and-reports/global-learning/). We are in the process of gaining endorsements from all the university and college presidents in Washington state, and hope these goals can serve as a framework for aligning global learning moving forward. On our website you can also download a copy of the International and Global Learning Inventory, which outlines the international and global learning opportunities available at Washington’s 19 four year degree-granting institutions. Global Washington’s next effort is to convene stakeholders in Global Learning within K-16 to determine who is doing what, and what role Global Washington might be able to play. OUR BUSINESS PLAN IS COMPLETE After six months of discussion and development, Global Washington is happy to announce that we have completed our business plan. The mission of Global Washington is to support and promote the global development sector in Washington state, and its vision is that Washington state be a recognized center for influential and innovative global development activity where diverse groups work collectively to build a world where opportunities are available for all people. Global Washington will continue its work focused on three goals: (1) Increase the visibility of Washington state’s global development sector, nationally and internationally; (2) Facilitate networking, knowledge exchange and professional development capacities of individuals and organizations engaged in global development; and (3) Promote the development of global learning opportunities for Washington’s students. Thanks to all who contributed to this plan!
