FEATURED ORGANIZATION: Global Partnerships - Growing the Social Investor

GPlogo.jpegFifteen years ago in 1994, Bill and Paula Clapp traveled to El Salvador to see a microfinance project in action.  In 2009, the institution they founded on their return, Global Partnerships, will direct $48.5 million in investment capital, while working with 27 microfinance institutions (MFI’s) and serving over 848,000 people. >>LEARN MORE

 CHANGEMAKER: James Dailey - Cap and Trade & Firewood

headshot-james.jpgAcross the developing world, kerosene lamps light homes at night, cow dung is burned in open pit fires for cooking, trees needed to replenish oxygen are cut down and burned for firewood.  All release carbon into the environment endangering people’s health, hastening lowland flooding or desertification of crop lands and threatening the very survival of those same developing nations.

GLOBAL ENTERTAINMENT: Forecast, The Consequences of Climate Change from the Amazon to the Arctic, from Darfur to Napa Valley by Stephan Faris

Stephen Faris’ seven chapters focus on the political impact of desertification in Darfur, the connection between weather and insurance rates and the flight from the coastal climates in the United States, mass migrations that are forging an alliance between green and right wing politics in Europe, deforestation and resulting disease in the Amazon, hotter summers in the American west pushing the grape harvest further north;  the melting of the Arctic and the international land grab, and how disappearing glaciers in the Himalayas are exacerbating the Kashmiri conflict for control of the rivers that flow through it and upon which Pakistani farmers depend for survival.  >>LEARN MORE

  • Save the Date! Global Washington Conference: A Blueprint for Action is scheduled for December 7th at the Microsoft campus. Join us as we explore leading trends and opportunities in global development, share best practices, develop cross-sector strategies, inspire and share innovations. Get connected and help us build a shared strategy for Washington to enhance global development leadership.

  • Water For Humans Launches Social Enterprise to Bring Clean Drinking Water Technology to the Developing World: Water for Humans, a non-profit social enterprise, launches their pilot project in July to bring low-cost, safe drinking water to two communities in Oaxaca, Mexico. Water for Humans recognizes the critical need of ensuring safe drinking water today and in the future. They are working to create access to potable water while also supporting clean water in the future through watershed restoration.
