Dear ICLEI Northwest Members:

I hope all of you are having a good summer. It seems as if the season just arrived in Seattle this past week (and not a moment too soon).

As our ICLEI network continues to grow in leaps and bounds in the Northwest and Alaska, you can look forward to more frequent regional updates. We are also in the process of updating our Northwest Regional Webpage. Please check these pages often for regional news.

*Please note the “new” (as of this spring) ICLEI USA web address: www.icleiusa.org.

Below you’ll find some odds and ends to update you all on what’s been happening in the ICLEI Network over the past few months.

Regional News and Events Welcome New Members in the Northwest EPA-sponsored Webinars

ALASKA - Last month ICLEI had the honor of being one of two presenters from the lower 48 at the Alaska Municipal League's First Annual Climate Conference in Anchorage. We met with representatives of our 6 local government members there (Anchorage, Homer, Juneau, Kodiak, Fairbanks-North Star Borough, Sitka). For a great overview of climate issues in Alaska, visit the monthly report distributed by Alaska Conservation Solutions.

IDAHO – A recent report indicates that the state's greenhouse gas emissions are growing at faster rates than the nation as a whole. From Moscow to Blaine County, however, local governments in the state are leading by taking action to work on solutions.

OREGON – In the past months, we've received new member applications from Clackamas County, McMinnville, and Milwaukie along with inquiries from a few other cities in the area! Little did these governments know they were
beating Governor Kulongoski to the punch: On June 18th, he challenged the state to cut carbon emissions
.

MONTANA – Helena MT became an ICLEI member in April – joining all the state capitals in the Northwest (with the exception of Salem, OR) as ICLEI members.

WASHINGTON – In April, ICLEI was a co-sponsor and Executive Director Michelle Wyman spoke at the Cooler Communities event, which
provided best practices for GHG and energy reduction programs as well as an in-depth overview of WA State climate policy and regulation.

In order to be able to spread the word about your efforts – whether it’s reaching a Milestone, implementing an innovative program, or asking a question of your peers in the ICLEI NW Network, please email your updates and questions to newsletter-usa@iclei.org or amy.shatzkin@iclei.org.

Additionally, ICLEI is always looking for examples of projects that governments are implementing to include in presentations to new members throughout the region. If you have a program to reduce GHG
emissions and energy use that you would like us to highlight (it
doesn't have to be innovative, just practical and savings-oriented) send us an email or PPT slide. Include a short description of the project and it's GHG, energy and or cost savings.

  • Blaine County, ID
  • Milwaukie, OR

(do not worry if your city or county is not listed yet – many are currently in process!).

We're hosting a conference call on July 16th at 9:00 a.m. for all ICLEI members in the Northwest. It will include an introduction, peer networking and Q&A.

Call in #: (218) 862-1115 Conference ID # 354967

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regions 9 and 10 are hosting
three web-based training sessions to address the nexus between waste
prevention, recycling, composting, materials management, disposal and
climate change.

The free sessions will be held from 1-3:30 p.m. PDT on June 26, July 16, and August 5, 2008. All stakeholders are invited to participate.

The goal is to bring together some of the best minds on the topic, help West Coast governments, nonprofit organizations, businesses and residents understand how prevention and recovery reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and do it in a way that creates the fewest climate impacts. By bringing live web-based training to your desktop and community, these webinars minimize the climate and environmental impacts associated with traditional conferences and trainings.
