New ICLEI Partnership Helps Cities Report Emissions
Through the CDP Cities Pilot Program, a joint effort by ICLEI and the Carbon Disclosure Project, more than 20 large urban centers (all but one of them ICLEI members) have agreed to publicly disclose their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data and their analysis of climate change risks, opportunities, and adaptation plans. • Pittsburgh becomes the first city in Pennsylvania to hire a full-time bicycle/pedestrian coordinator.
• Washington DC launches SmartBike DC, the nation’s first self-service bike-rental program.
• Marin County, CA, proposes a plan to allow cities and towns to directly and collectively buy renewable power.
• More cities, including Portland, New York City, and San Francisco, are closing streets to traffic and opening them to pedestrians and cyclists.
• Salt Lake City commits to reducing emissions another 20 percent.
• New York City studies how climate change will impact the city’s infrastructure.
