Land Use Subcommittee Draft Recommendations Released

The Land Use Subcommittee of Governor Schwarzenegger’s Climate Action Team (LUSCAT) has released its draft recommendations to ARB for new changes related to land use and transportation planning to be included in the AB 32 Scoping Plan.  ICLEI was a participant in the LUSCAT Subcommittee,  which provided a broad range of recommended strategies and measures related to land use.   The LUSCAT recommendations, along with ARB’s Haagen-Smit Symposium, provided two important input son strategies to inform local government land use planning decisions to ensure the AB32 Goals are met.

This month’s spotlight shines on the City of Santa Rosa in Sonoma County, who developed  a program to convert aquatic biomass to fuel for government-owned vehicles.  This innovative approach to reducing emissions from waste and transportation won the 2008 Climate Innovation Invitational, a national competition, at ICLEI’s Local Action Summit in Albuquerque, NM (Above: Dell Tredinnick, of Santa Rosa, receives the award from last year's winner, Dave Konkle of Ann Arbor).

US Senate Blocks Climate Legislation: Earlier this month the Senate blocked the Climate Security Act sponsored by Senators Boxer (D-CA), Lieberman (I-CT), and Warner (R-VA).  Climate change policy is expected to be high on the agenda for the next President and Congress. In the meantime, despite the final vote there is finally momentum and action in Washington after years of sitting on the sidelines and standing in the way. ICLEI has drafted a template op-ed for our members to use with their local media.

California media coverage of the vote: Read the Los Angeles Times editorial on the defeat of the Climate Security Act, “Senate Shifts on Warming” or the op-ed by Senator Boxer, co-sponsor of the bill, in the San Jose Mercury News.
