What's New With DD&S?
|
|
Dear Marilyn
Our spring was busy. We spent a month vending at the Dollywood’s Festival Of Nations. After that we traveled to Paralounge in North Florida, Drum Strong in Charlotte and the Bark Bash on the Jersey Shore. Our traveling took us to summer NAMM in Nashville and Floyd Fest with Drum Strong in July. Thankfully we were able to get most of our orders out to our customers in a timely manner. It was an exciting and exhausting challenge.
We are excited about Drum Circle Magazine. Created by Jana Broder, this magazine should be a boon to every drum circle. You can read all about it on the Drum Magic website.
We have several new things. Check out new drum bags from ENO and also Pakistan. Click on this Summer Flier Link to see the limited selection of drums that we have from Mali and Guinea. Mud cloths and mud cloth accessories are included on the flier. We carry the Jumbie Jam from Panyard Steel Drums. They sound great and sell quickly at the shows we attend. We have Krins and skins from Guinea. Quantities of most of these things are limited, so they are not on the website’s shopping cart. Call or email us if you are interested in them.
An Ivory Coast Container came in in April and another is due in September. We will have the usual djembes and skins in the shipment. We also expect to have djembe shells made of lenge (lenke) wood.
We are currently selling Guinea cowhides. There are Ivory Coast hides coming in September. Shorty continues to experiment with kip, calf and cow hide for heading djembes.
Rebecca is our newest employee. She is learning how to do everything from packing to tuning. We are very grateful to Tamy who helped us through Dollywood and more.
Fall travel plans include Music on the Mountain in Boone, NC and Paralounge in Silver Springs, FL.
On a personal note grandson, Leo, has brought his mommy to visit a couple of times. Our other daughter, Elanor, is planning to marry Josh right after she graduates from FGCU in December.

Rebecca

Rebecca helps us a few days a week with everything from packing to tightening drums. Rebecca is a drummer, performer and budding drum circle facilitator. She performs with the band, Tuatha Dea, in and around the Smoky Mountains. Along with some friends, Rebecca, takes our drums to festivals and the Gatlinburg Farmer’s Market where they facilitate drum circles. We are happy that this eager young lady is helping us through our busy days.

Tip: Choosing A Rope Tuned Drum
The most important aspect of your drum is sound. Sound is subjective. It’s matter of what sounds good to you. You must take a look at the physical make-up of the drum.
1. Look at the head. Hold the drum up to the light and look through the bottom for pinholes and other flaws. Look between the shell and the ring any damage to the skin.
2. Look at the integrity of the rope. Is it frayed or solid? Is there enough extra rope for diamonds if your drum needs tuning later.
3. Look inside and outside the body for cracks. Some are minor just part of the wood. Some are big and go all the way through.
4. Look at the rings and verticals. Are there sufficient loops/knots to hold the head in place? More than 2 finger widths between knots is not good.
5. Hit it! How does it sound? Listen for buzzes. Some drums need tuning. Ask for that to be done and then check the sound again.
All of these issues can be remedied (new head, new rope, etc). Even cracks are fixable. So if you find a drum that calls to you and has a problem all is not lost. If, however, you are paying premium price for that great drum, there should be few flaws.

Joke
A drummer, tired from being ridiculed by his peers, decides to learn how to play some "real" musical instruments. He goes to a music store, walks in, approaches the clerk, and says, "I'll take that red trumpet over there and that accordian." The store clerk looks at him a bit funny, and replies, "Okay, you can have the fire extinquisher, but the radiator's got to stay."
