College
Access & Opportunity Guide nearing publication
We’ve got our sights set on a spring publication
date for the inaugural College
Access & Opportunity Guide,
a comprehensive college guidebook dedicated to promoting
college opportunity for the traditionally underserved.
200+ colleges and universities have already confirmed their
participation. Selected institutions demonstrate an exceptional
commitment to college access and retention and are profiled
in light of the programs and opportunities they present
for first-generation, low-income, and minority students.
With
support from the participating institutions, the initial
distribution of the Guide will be for free to low-income
high schools and community-based organizations across the
country. If you are not among those designated to receive
a free copy of the Guide or you would like additional copies,
the College Access & Opportunity Guide will be available
for sale.
More information on sales and distribution will
be made available as we approach publication.
CSO’s
Executive Director featured in Continental Airlines Magazine article
on college admissions
In case you haven’t flown Continental Airlines recently, Center
for Student Opportunity's Executive Director, Matt Rubinoff, is quoted
in this February’s Continental Airlines Magazine. “Operation:
Admissions” by Anne Trubek provides some helpful
advice for students and families on approaching the college search
and application process.
Welcome new hires
Center for Student Opportunity is pleased to welcome two new additions
to its staff.
Joseph Carlos joins CSO as Associate Director of College Programs.
Carlos will support strategic planning and partnerships, programming,
fund development, staff recruitment, and overall operations management,
with a focus on working with college partners in support of outreach,
recruitment, and retention for first-generation, low-income, and
traditionally underserved students. He comes to CSO after serving
as assistant director of admissions at Morehouse College, his alma
mater.
Joseph Tavares joins CSO to lead the College Access & Opportunity
Guide. As project coordinator, Tavares oversees the Guide’s
content development, interfaces with nominated and participating
colleges and universities, and directs the project’s marketing
and distribution efforts. He comes to CSO after a time with Hager
Sharp, a Washington, DC-based social marketing firm. Tavares is a
graduate of St. Bonaventure University where he studied journalism
and mass communications and volunteers with College Bound, a college
access program in Washington, DC.
