Horizons
Horizons is a program designed to encourage women to enter the fields of science and technology. While women have an equal aptitude as men in these fields, women are consistently underrepresented within them. This program hopes to helps change that fact by and is designed to help girls (grades 7 and 8) understand the excitement of mathematics and science, to choose courses in high school that will lead to college study in math-based disciplines, and recognize the potential for fulfilling careers in these fields. In addition to compelling academic hands-on projects in science and engineering, professional development and personal enrichment components support the academic material by exploring careers in nontraditional fields of study, and by addressing issues of interest to young women at a critical stage of adolescence.

College of Mount St. Joseph

Project SCOPE
Project SCOPE (Summer Collegiate Orientation Program and Enrichment) provides access to higher education for minority students. African-American high school sophomores from the Greater Cincinnati area reside on the Mount’s campus and attend classes for one to two weeks. Classes improve skills in sciences, computer literacy, psychology, and spoken word. Students attend workshops about the college admission process, library research, financial aid, and study skills. The program is offered for three consecutive years, culminating in college preparedness and six transferable college credits for high school seniors.

Summer Academic Workshop

Mills College hosts the Summer Academic Workshop (SAW), a rigorous four-week academic program for selected students designed to aid in the development of critical thinking skills, enhanced reading and writing skills, leadership skills, and an appreciation and respect for diversity. The SAW program offers selected students an intensive three-module, four-week course of sociological inquiry, English, and mathematics and logic. The program is framed around the intersection of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexual orientation. This theme is used as the basis for developing critical thinking skills, enhanced reading and writing skills, leadership skills, and an appreciation and respect for diversity.

Ohio Northern University

Vision Builders

Ohio Northern University has received a grant from the Minority Recruitment Program of the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges to establish Vision Builders, a minority student recruitment effort aimed at broadening the scope of the University’s student diversity. With the ultimate goal to increase student diversity at ONU, Vision Builders features two components. The first facet is a mentoring program where Ohio Northern students of color work with multicultural high school seniors throughout the year. Current partners include the MI Ready Program at the Lima Senior High School of Multiple Intelligences, and the Lima Black Achievers. The second component is the Vision Builders Day at ONU. The event will bring to approximately 50 multicultural students from four different Ohio high schools to campus where they will spend the day learning about the University.

CHAMPS (Communities, Helping, Assisting, and Motivating Promising Students) is a youth outreach program in the community.  Its mission is to nurture, motivate, and challenge selected Laurens County students who have promise and potential, but who may otherwise fall short of their highest educational potential.  CHAMPS provides these students with a vision of their future and stimulates them to strive toward post-secondary education.

ENLACE

ENLACE is a community-focused college outreach program that forms a partnership between the University of South Florida, Hillsborough Community College, the Hispanic Services Council and the School District of Hillsborough County in order to increase the number of Latinos enrolling in USF and obtaining college degrees. ENLACE focuses on local Latino middle and high school students, ensuring that these students complete high school and enroll in the college of their choice. Once students are enrolled in USF ENLACE supports their academic success, while promoting retention and graduation. The ENLACE program works to enhance the success of Latino students so that they may achieve their full potential as role models, mentors and community leaders.
