People For Puget Sound eNews | February 2009

February is a short month but crammed full of issues and events for members and supporters. The Legislature is in session, so read our weekly updates on bills and budget issues—and do your part to make your voices heard this Feb 19 at Citizens’ Lobby Day. But the month’s also filled with beachwalks, music and games, so read on and mark your calendars.

REGISTER FOR LOBBY DAY AND MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD FOR THE SOUND

New Public Lands Commissioner Peter Goldmark’s the keynote speaker, and we’re looking for 450 citizen lobbyists to join voices on Feb 19 in Olympia so register for Lobby Day right now. Can’t do it in person? Then do the Photo Campaign. Support the Environmental Coalition’s priorities, one of which is reducing stormwater pollution. Also, let’s make the shippers pay for the rescue tug stationed at Neah Bay.

MUSIC AND GAMES FOR THE SOUND

Hear this: Dance the night away Feb 5 at the Reggae Consciousness Festival 2009 in Seattle, a portion of the proceeds benefitting saving the Sound.

Local artist Tai Shan is donating her online sales of her single “tiny planet” to us, so download now.

No Couch-Potatoing: See you on Feb 8 at Seattle’s Green Lake for the Valentine’s Day 5K Dash so stop by and say hello.

And Puget Sound Pub Trivia Night is Feb 10 at the Spitfire Grill in Seattle. Show off your Puget Sound IQ and help save the Sound.

SOUND STEWARD TRAINING IN FEBRUARY IN SEATTLE AND EVERETT

Sound Stewards are true Sound heroes, and here’s your yearly chance to take the free training and give back to the Sound a few hours a year to make it a better place. Register now for Seattle sessions or for Snohomish sessions. See what restoration work’s all about on Feb 14 [Love Your Puget Sound] by volunteering at Jetty Island for a good day's work.

KNOW ANY OTHER SOUND HEROES? NOMINATE FOR MAGNUSON AWARD TODAY

Magnuson Sound Legacy Award winners are individuals or groups who have worked to make Puget Sound a better place for its marine critters. Nominations close Feb 28, so use the online form today. Winners will be honored at our 4th Annual “New Day For Puget Sound” fundraiser breakfast Apr 8 which features as keynote speaker Billy Frank, Jr. a true Sound hero.

NIGHT ADVENTURES CONTINUE ON SOUND BEACHES AT LOW TIDE

We’re genuinely and pleasantly surprised at how much interest there is in the low-tide night beachwalks we lead in the winter. On Feb 6, we’re on the beach at Washington Park in Anacortes, at Fort Ward SP on Bainbridge Island, and at Olympic Beach in Edmonds.

LIKE YOUR NATURE INDOORS? LISTEN TO THIS

Dr. Tom Mumford talks about how seaweed and kelp indicate the health of Puget Sound at our REI Speaker Series Feb 5 in Seattle.

Learn about what marine critters eat on Feb 13 at the Bellingham Marine Life Center.

Enjoy a show’n’tell in Olympia by David Jamison and Gabby Byrne on Feb 24 about the critters under the Boston Harbor piers.

And, on the radio, listen weekly to the creature features on Puget Sound Voices.

WE’VE BEEN PACKING THE ROOM FOR VOLUNTEER ORIENTATIONS

No kidding. Standing room only for Involvement Coordinator Jamie Wine’s orientation sessions in the Seattle office. Next one is Feb 11 and you don’t want to miss it. Sign up to volunteer today. Do good, feel good.

FEB 13 IS COMMENT DEADLINE FOR PERMITTING WEST POINT SEWAGE

The issue is how stringent the water quality standards should be for King County’s West Point sewage plant when it discharges our waste into Puget Sound—now that we have an Action Agenda to restore the Sound to health by 2020? Get informed and make your voice heard. Stay alert by joining the activist network.
