Feature Story:
How To Build Up A Client Through Download Success
A BNI Success Story
By Daniel Wheeler, BNI Embarcadero
THE PROBLEM
“I was introduced to a client who had created a handful of popular iPhone applications. Although he was a referral from two different BNI members, he was initially reluctant to invest in the services of my law firm. A BNI member and I had to explain the value and necessity of legally protecting his intellectual property.”
THE SOLUTION
“We delivered at every stage for this client and achieved extraordinary results for him. We got his products on the Apple and iTunes Stores. We scoured the Internet for him to find competitors who were infringing his applications. We’ve had these infringing products taken down. We even sued a large company that ripped off his application and obtained a large six-figure settlement for him.”
THE BENEFIT
“Our client has made a lot of money due to our work for him and my firm earned excellent fees in the process. It’s a home run for everyone involved, especially the client, who now owns one of the top 25 iPhone applications with tens of thousands of downloads a month.”
All I Want For New Year’s Is Giver’s Gain
By Gil Zeimer, BNI Ambassador, BNI Embarcadero
Please fill in the missing word:
_ _ _ _ And Ye Shall Receive.
It Is Better To _ _ _ _ Than To Receive.
_ _ _ _ The Gift That Keeps On Giving.
It’s no secret that the missing word is “Give.” That’s why “Giver’s Gain” is the mission statement, core philosophy and unique selling proposition of every BNI chapter around the world.
According to the 20th Anniversary Edition of Givers Gain, The BNI Story by Dr. Ivan Misner, “This philosophy sets us apart from other organizations and enables us to build a company that is uniquely positive. It is an organizational culture unlike any other in the world, a culture that can be exposed in two words that are foremost in the mind of every member: Givers Gain.
From the day in 1985 when he coined the phrase, “Givers Gain” is the clear, memorable, two-word phrase woven into the fabric of every BNI chapter around the world.
Another way he said it is, “If you want to get business, you have to be willing to give business to other people.”
Here are five ways I embrace Givers Gain:
- Listen for trigger points –– When I talk with my clients, friends and family members, I listen for phrases that will trigger the opportunity for me to refer a trusted member of my chapter –– or someone in another chapter if they’re not represented in mine.
- Give referrals throughout the week –– A former member of BNI Embarcadero asked how I can grab a pile of referral slips every Wednesday and hand out referrals, while he was still trying to wake up. I replied that I work on referrals throughout the week in phone calls and email follow-ups, not just on meeting days.
- Give a referral to someone outside your power team -- The majority of referrals most of us give are within our power teams. When you think outside of that box, you can give many more referrals than you have in the past.
- Ask “Can I refer someone to you?” -- A simple question can open the door to you pulling out your chapter’s directory and making several referrals during one meeting.
- Say “Do you know that I’m in the world’s largest referral organization?” –– Tell your colleagues, friends and family that you’re an active BNI participant. When they say, “What’s BNI?” you can then invite them to a meeting as your guest. Who knows? They might even join the group and you can be their sponsor.
Button, Button, Who’s Got A Recession Button?

NEW POLICY ON REPORTINGCLOSED BUSINESS: You can now report Closed Business for the previous month only through the first Wednesday of the next month. After that, it’s the new month’s Closed Business. Party Central: Social Events Calendar
Palio d’Asti Happy Hour Pizza Party: Our Social Committee of Katherine Bernitt, Cathy Cohn and Dan Joraanstad has set aside Thursday, January 15th, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm for a celebratory happy hour at one of the top Italian restaurants in the City. Located at 640 Sacramento Street between Kearny and Montgomery join us at Palio d'asti's. (Did you know that another BNI chapter meets there on Thursdays for breakfast!!)
Palio d'asti's offers free pizza while supplies last with the purchase of two adult beverages. Click here to see the delicious choices: http://www.paliodasti.com /happyHour/index.html.
You can take the California Cable Car or stop at the Montgomery Street BART station for public transit fans. Or there's plenty of free street parking after 6pm and cheap parking in Chinatown’s Portsmouth Plaza Garage at Kearny & Clay Streets.
The restaurant has promised us the front room of the restaurant with a table set up for twelve, to expand as the party grows. This should be a lot of fun and I guarantee the pizza's are top notch. Kids are welcome. Please shoot an email response to Dan so that he can keep a running tally of who's coming and give a head's up to the restaurant: dan.o.joraanstad@ wachoviasec.com.
