Keeping You in Stitches

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!!  It is amazing how quickly the holidays come around each year - must have something to do with how quickly time goes by the older I get.  I used to be the original Mrs. Clause and couldn't wait for the holidays to arrive so I could start shopping and execute all the decorating ideas floating around in my head.  I would spend days on end making sure that each decoration had just the right spot and each ornament on the tree was hanging just perfectly.

Now fast forward to Christmas 2008...drag out the Christmas's boxes, throw a few decorations around, send checks to the kids, buy cookies at the grocery store and I am done.  Needless to say somewhere along the line I lost my Number 1 Mrs. Clause ranking.

I gave up shopping because I don't do well in crowds, I don't like standing in line and most importantly I have no idea what the grandkids want.  What I think is cool or cute they wouldn't be caught dead in or wouldn't consider playing with.  And I don't even want to talk about all the traffic and the number of idiots behind the wheel.  I think that every person that couldn't drive in any of the other 49 states moved to Florida so they could drive me nuts.

Sounds like I am totally a bah humbug kind of person, but that really isn't exactly true.  I still love Christmas Eve even if it is just a quiet dinner with my husband.  I love going to my son's' home early Christmas morning to watch the total joy and excitement on the faces of my youngest 2 grandchildren as they see what Santa placed under the tree.  And I love preparing a calorie laden dinner for a loud and boisterous Prince crowd (except for my oldest son and family in Philly - maybe someday).    But I am always glad when January rolls around and things get back to normal too.

I am sure that each of you has family traditions some of which will be passed down from generation to generation and with the addition of "new" family members, the beginnings of new traditions as well.  I hope that each of you can begin a new tradition this year, but most of all I hope you have a merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.   The photo below is my Christmas card to you - and I even hung the ornaments in just the right spots.

Online Stores -
Check Their Reputation Before You Buy!

Recently I was shopping for a new camcorder to shoot Nancy's videos. Using Google, I found a store whose price was half that of other stores.  Upon further checking however, I found over 20 complaints against the store within the past 15 days and I mean BAD complaints!  So I bought elsewhere.

Don't let the holidays turn into "bah humbug". Before you buy from an online store, check its reputation by reading what their customers are saying.

Here's how:

  • Check a store's rating at www.Resellerratings.com . When you go to their site, look about three inches down the left side of the page and you will see the words "Store Ratings" in red. To the right of that you will see a box with the words "Enter store name". Do so and click the "Find ratings and reviews" button.
  • Similar store rating sites you might try - www.RateitAll.com and www.FraudWatchers.org.
  • Use Google to find store reviews. Type the phrase "Store name ratings reviews" into the Google search field replacing, Store name, with the actual name of the store i.e. "Kay Jewelers ratings reviews".
  • Read customer reviews posted for stores on Amazon, Yahoo, Bizrate and similar sites.

Concentrate on the most recent reviews (last 4 to 6 weeks) as store behavior constantly changes.  One or two low ratings in ten are acceptable, but if you see as many good ratings as bad, you might want to shop elsewhere.

On a related subject, one of my favorite product review sites is www.ConsumerSearch.com. This site uses a list of quality product reviews done be others, such as Consumers Reports, to develop its recommendations.

Happy Holidays from Techie Tom!
