Keeping You in Stitches

Happy 2009!

The holidays are just a happy memory now and all the boxes of Christmas decorations lie happily in their boxes and are stored away for another 11 months.  I love the holidays, but I am also glad when they are over.  Now I know that sounds a bit Scrooge like, but my body tells me that I am just getting too old for all the work that goes with having a happy holiday.   It takes a lot of work to make "happy" happy.    I do hope that all of you had a wonderful holiday season filled with lots of food (why should I be the only one that gained weight), lots of tiny hugs, a few new traditions and fulfilled wishes.

Tips for You!

Keep a Thread Journal

When I start a new project, I always keep a thread journal. In the thread journal I keep a record of the manufacturer (such as Isacord or Superior), the thread number and color and any special notes associated with that particular part of the design. Now I know this sounds like a lot of work, but believe me it saves a lot of time when I want to go back and reconstruct specific thread colors from a previous project. I may want to tweak the thread colors a bit to fit the new project, but having recorded "core" colors gives me a group of thread colors I know work well together.

Keep your thread colors organized

I have close to 1,000 spools of threads so it is imperative I keep them organized. Most of my threads are either on wall racks or in clear plastic containers made just for thread storage. So I came up with a tip that works for me and I hope it works well for you too.

I normally pull about 20-30 spools of thread to start a new project. The tricky thing before I Spool-racks-200x284.jpgcame up with this system was keeping the spools organized so I could find the same thread color again when I needed it. So I came up with a system.

In the picture to the right you will see small circular "dots" on the top of most of the threads (these dots can be found at any office supply store). On each dot I have written the manufacturer's thread number. Once I remove that particular thread from the rack, I remove the "dot" from the spool and stick it to the rack spindle. Now when I am done using each thread color, I match the thread number on the top or side of the spool with the numbered "dot" on the spindle. I put the "dot" back on top of the thread and put it in place on the thread rack. If you use the plastic thread storage boxes, the system works the same way.

You can organized your thread colors in any format you want or you can get thread charts from Superior, Isacord (by thread number not color family)and many of the other thread manufacturers to help organize your thread into color families. You can match up their numbering system with the layout of your threads and you will always know where each thread color is located. Tis a good thing!!

Keep Your Computer Running Smoothly!

A previous Newsletter contained instructions on how to remove trash from your hard drive.

An equally important tool to keep your computer running smoothly is the Disk Defragmentor.  Anyone can do it and it may save you an expensive service call.

Send me an email if you are interested in "How to" videos showing how to take care of your computer and use its software.  Enjoy!

I Leave You with This...

I know the economy has challenged each of us and we have had to come up with creative ways to stretch our dollars.  I hope that 2009 is a better year for all of us.  Till the next newsletter.  Happy thread painting!!
