Educational Opportunities

ImageDon't forget about our Adventure Day Camps!
We have two more opportunities before our Summer Camp begins. We welcome students from kindergarten through 8th grade for a day of non-stop fun. We provide activities from 9AM till 4PM on days during the school year when school is not in session, for example: staff development days and school holidays. Your children will be outside socializing and enjoying nature. Each day is an outdoor adventure filled with fun and learning.

Interested? Please bring or send a completed registration form with a deposit to secure your spot as soon as possible.

Are you looking for a program that helps introduce younger children to nature? Please ask about our Nature's Keepers program that targets ages 3-5. This program meets every Thursday from 10am-11:30am. Call (607) 662-4632 for details.

From My Sit Spot By: Pete Angie

Image Early morning light comes to the forest incrementally, in stages and shades almost imperceptible in their variance. At my sit spot recently, tree trunks slowly transformed from the ubiquitous gray of pre-dawn to their own distinct colors. Dark chocolate oaks, steel sugar maples tinged with green highlights of lichen, the granite-gray bark of American beeches. Then, when I thought day had fully arrived, the sun broke over the horizon and shone warm and golden on all of our cold faces. A nuthatch made its nasal yank! almost continually, unseen.....

Get to Know Cayuga Basin Birds! Ornithology Course; welcomes students all Ages

ImageDuring this very popular 8-week course you will learn to identify birds by sight and song and visit the best birding spots in the Cayuga Lake basin with local experts. Discover the stories behind bird behaviors, and get ready to greet thousands of migratory birds returning in spring! The class is taught by Dr. Steve Kress, Vice president of Bird Conservation for Audubon, and guest speakers from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

“The thing I enjoy the most about Spring Field Ornithology is sharing my enthusiasm for birds with those who are just getting started with bird watching,” says Kress. “When they go home they can see things in their own backyard they never noticed before.”

There are two sections to the course: Wednesday evening lectures on bird song, nesting, courtship, migration, habitat and more, and guided Saturday or Sunday field trips to local birding hotspots. Participants may sign up for lectures only, just the field trips, or both. There are also two optional overnight trips--one to Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge and the other to Cape May, New Jersey, to experience peak spring migration.

The cost of the course is $150 for lectures, $150 for the field trips, or $290 for both sections. Additional fees are required for the optional overnight trips, and discounts are available for members of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
