Travel & Corporate Getaway's

Winvian
A whimsical and indulgent escape

The drive itself is quite a treat; windy roads, lush, green fields, and more country barns than I could count… At just two hours after leaving New York or Boston, you arrive in bucolic Litchfield and before you can blink your eyes, you are at Winvian’s door, a unique hotel complex where guests disappear into a magical setting, indulging in exquisite cuisine, ethereal spa treatments, and a host of activities from a bygone era…

It is easy to zoom past the property—keep you eyes open for the unforgettable trademark…the whimsical yellow hat. When you arrive, the white picket fence opens, welcoming you to this private oasis. The main house is cozy and inviting with a host of classic games to enjoy (pool table, foosball, a variety of table games and shuffleboard). The scent of the cedar chips from the fireplace in the main room is intoxicating, instantly setting your mind at ease, eliminating any angst that you had from the hectic pace of the city. There is a fully stocked bar open to all, making you feel as if you are in your own home.

The Winvian is endorsed by Relais & Chateaux, assurance that the food is set to a very high standard. While relaxing on the porch, you will often see the chefs gather in vegetable garden, picking fresh herbs and discussing the menu for your next meal…just another detail that adds to the magic.

For breakfast and lunch, you can dine in your room or head to the second floor in the main house, with wrap around views of the grounds, or opt for a picnic at a number of breathtaking parks in the area. Hotel employees pack a perfect lunch and provide service, which is extremely attentive without being invasive, allowing you to enjoy the area along with the fantastic food at the property.

At breakfast, the server lists off a variety of choices the kitchen whipped up that morning: buckwheat and banana pancakes, local scrambled eggs with truffles and fresh strawberry and mango smoothies are just a few of the selections I was lucky to enjoy while staying there – the menu changes regularly, which allows you to enjoy the fresh flavors of the seasonal fare. During lunch you are presented a menu with a few appetizer and entrée options which you can select as many as you desire. A few dishes that stuck out were: The twist of homemade linguini with fresh pesto, sun choke soup with garlic croutons, and the cheese plate. (I think I had at every meal :) Rest assured that every detail will be cared for and that food and service are held to the highest standard.

Dinner is a bit more formal, yet never strays from the intimate and cozy atmosphere. There are three rooms where you can opt to dine. One is designed in dark wood with hunter green tones, another is Victorian style with lemon colored walls, and the last has a light rustic decor…each room has a fireplace. A nice dining benefit is that the owners of the Winvian pride themselves on understanding the value a dollar (especially in these economic times) and provide a phenomenal wine list without a significant markup – even the house wines (all included in your price), are of high quality and will satisfy even a discerning palate.

There are eighteen chalets, each with a unique design and atmosphere– they range from a Tree house, perched 20 feet off the ground, to a room that incorporates most of a restored Sikorsky helicopter retired by the Coast Guard; there is also a cottage with an artist theme and a beaver lodge, which includes an actual beaver lodge, suspended above the bed. No detail was overlooked in the creation of these small homes; they all create memories that you will not soon forget. (They encourage exploring all the little hidden secrets). I stayed in the Stable cottage which had three levels. The living room has an equestrian feel, accented with clean lines. The bathroom was all glass completely exposed into nature allowing the weather forecast to create the mood of your bathing experience. Rows of oversized squared- shaped windows lining the cottage with views of the forest add interesting shadows of light when the sun goes down. The staff is very accommodating and I was fortunate to get a tour of several cottages, each of which has a unique story and a sense of enchantment.

There is a beautiful spa on the property with specialized rooms for each particular treatment. (Aycura Tub for hydro-thermo treatments, a suite with a blazing fireplace and private sitting area ideal for couples massages, and the Ashiastsu bar for the authentic Oriental style massage).

The Gordon Brown House is where private events and corporate meetings take place. The venue is rustic-chic with all the modern necessities. Besides the grand piano the space is blank pallet, allowing each event to take on these own expression.

The Winvian is a magical place. Whether your stay is to rejuvenate and be pampered, celebrate a marriage or gather amongst colleagues for a corporate retreat, this fairyland spot brings out the kid in you while feeling like a king!

New and Noteworthy

Macao Trading Co.

311 Church Street, Tribeca
Open nightly 5 p.m. - 4 a.m.
By Guy Alvarez

We were looking for a new, fun restaurant with delicious food and a happening scene to take one of our best clients and his friend out to dinner. Knowing the type of ambiance he prefers, we decided to make a reservation at Macao Trading Co. (co-owned by Chanterelle's David Waltuck and the owners of Employees Only), The space has two levels filled with cool artifacts, drawings and antiques. It has the look and feel of an old funky warehouse by the sea. There is a lounge below the restaurant that carries the same warehouse motif.

The food and specialty cocktails are Macanese (a mixture Portugese, Chinese, and Indian influences). We began by ordering a few of their specialty cocktails and then sampled a couple of the small dishes like the shrimp in a green sauce, the meatballs filled with cheese, the croquettes filled with mushrooms and truffles and the steamed oysters in a hoisin sauce. It was all delicious and extremely filling.

Because we were a little stuffed, we decided to only order two of the large dishes (we were four), the grilled lamb chops with a red pepper jam and the macanese paella with monkfish, clams and shrimp. The lamb was very juicy and tender while the paella had a very unique a distinct flavor when compared to your traditional Spanish paella.

After dinner we took the staircase to the lounge downstairs. There was a good looking crowd hanging out, enjoying the cocktails and the tunes being blasted by the DJ. The evening turned out to be a big success. Our client called me the next day to thank us for the night, commended us on the choice of restaurant and asked me to please not let him drink so much Don Julio the next time we go out.
