TCYMN ALL CITY FILM SHOWCASE: SUBMIT NOW

ImageThe All City Youth Video Showcase features some of the best films made by Minnesota students under the age of 19. Videos are selected and curated by a panel of young filmmakers from the Twin Cities Youth Media Network (TCYMN). The Showcase is presented by TCYMN, a collective of 18 organizations and schools that support young filmmakers.

IN PROGRESS: NEW ARTWORK FROM NETT LAKE VILLAGE

ImageWe've just completed the first week of digital storytelling in Nett Lake Village. So far 30 young people have stopped by to work on art pieces for their community, and the work as usual is incredible. Please take a look at some of the first pieces that a part of an upcoming poster exhibit entitled "Determination." Of course there is more work to come and we will be sure to share it with you as Internet access permits!

PHOTOGRAPHER LAURI LYONS WORKS WITH YOUTH AT KULTURE KLUB COLLABORATIVE

Throughout the month of August, photographer Lauri Lyons partnered with teenagers from the Kulture Klub Collaborative, a nonprofit arts organization that brings together artists and homeless youth, in a project entitled Home Is Where You Make It. The mobile project, onsite at the Walker for one night, consists of enlarged close- up portraits of homeless youth mounted on six portable cardboard structures. Join us for a conversation with Lyons about her work and her collaboration with Twin Cities youth. Lyons’ photographs and essays have appeared in such publications as Vibe, The London Observer, and Fortune Magazine and she has exhibited her work at The International Center of Photography, Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Civil Rights Museum.

SPNN: Set It Up 2009-2010 Crew Applications are Ready! APPLY NOW!

ImageWe are now accepting applications for youth to join the Set It Up next semester. Set It Up is a teen-produced TV show exploring issues affecting teens in St. Paul . To apply to be a Set It Up crew member , you must be a high school student (9th-12th grade) , a resident of St. Paul , and have an interest in community issues and media/television production. Crew members will receive high school credit for their contributions , as well as a bus pass to get to and from SPNN.

SPNN: Calling Teens 14-19!!

ImageLearn the basics of Video Production @ the Upcoming PSA Class at The Canvas

Come produce a PSA (Public Service Announcement) about The Canvas – the new arts-based teen center at Hancock Rec Center - in this exciting one-week class. Participants will learn how to plan , shoot , and edit a short video using digital cameras and iMovie , and then learn how to upload and share it on the web. Taught by adult and youth instructors. Come ready to be creative , learn new skills, and have fun!

YOUTH MEDIA REPORTER: TWIN CITIES ISSUE

ImageWelcome to YMR's Twin Cities Volume 3: Issue 4, where practitioners in the Twin Cities investigate youth media practice and share their insights to the field.

The topics covered in this issue include:
• Supporting young people to responsibly engage with Web 2.0 tools within our programs;
• Supporting young girls to critique media, avoid stereotypes, and act out new identities;
• Reflecting on the Twin Cities Youth Media Network: a model of local, regional youth media network;
• Learning from the tools and practices of journalism to engage young people in story-telling and local political change;
• Learning from artists and media art educators that apply a creative, inventive, and experimental aspect to teen media makers;
• Seeing how the Youth Video Exchange Network functions as a pipeline for the field to increase our efforts and those of the young people we serve.;
• Viewing successful partnerships between high schools, universities, and youth media educators that encourage Somali youth in the Twin Cities—who have been marginalized by news media—to create better news and media vehicles that accurately represent their perspectives and local communities; and
• Supporting the long-term development of girls.

The Fred Rogers Memorial Scholarship

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation, in association with Ernst & Young LLP, is offering three (3) scholarships in honor of Fred Rogers, the creator and long-time host of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

The scholarships are intended to support and encourage aspiring undergraduate and graduate students to pursue careers in children’s media and further the values and principles of Fred Rogers’ work.

Pay It Forward Foundation

The Pay it Forward Foundation offers students the opportunity to identify what they consider to be the challenges of their communities. They tackle such problems as homelessness, pollution, youth violence, literacy issues, the loneliness experienced by long-term hospital and nursing home patients, and the alienation of today's at-risk youth from the community. The Pay It Forward Foundation provides seed money for such worthwhile projects.

Your school, church or community youth group may apply for this $500 mini-grant to fund a one time project with a Pay It Forward focus. Applications will be accepted anytime by email to grants@payitforwardfoundation.com.
