Perpich Center for Arts Education High School : Becky Yates

Director's notes- "You are cordially invited to a stop motion animation about deceiving nature and constant change of outward appearance. I displayed a table being carefully set and a pineapple being served because in many cultures pineapple represents hospitality. I then showed the pineapple opening up and being full of nails, then closing, then re-opening and being filled with candy. I wanted to show that you cannot really tell what someone will be like based off of their outward appearance and that people are constantly changing. I used warm lighting and colors to give the animation a welcoming and inviting mood."

Perpich : Super 8 Screening

ImageThe senior media arts students will have a screening of their experimental super 8 film projects on March 17, 2009 at 7:30 PM in the performance Hall at the Perpich Center for Arts Education. This project was inspired by early montage theory of Soviet filmmakers and later works of Avant-garde filmmakers Stan Brakage, Bruce Connor and Pat O'Neill. The last two filmmakers were featured at the Walker Art Center on evenings where the students attended screenings, panel discussions and a question and answer session with Pat O'Neill. The films were rhythmically edited to student created sound collages or original music. This event is free and open to the public.

Around Town Film Festival: Women with Vision

ImageMarch 6 - 21
Walker Art Center

The 16th year of this festival, which recognizes the perspectives women bring to the art of filmmaking, situates us in a world interconnected by politics and global economics. With the series Views from Iran as its centerpiece, Women with Vision also includes new works made in Nepal, Korea, France, Holland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Israel—all regional premieres, with the French film God’s Offices making its U.S. debut. The festival also features works by two Minneapolis filmmakers, one who approaches her subject by hurtling to the sun via 3-D, and the other by zeroing in on one small locale in South Minneapolis during a protest movement. Guest filmmakers include So Yong Kim, who opens the festival with her dreamlike Treeless Mountain, and Astra Taylor, who offers the witty, insightful Examined Life. . . .

Around Town Film Festival: Beyond Borders

ImageMarch 25 - 29
Parkway Theater

The Beyond Borders Film Festival, presented by the non-profit Rimé Foundation, uses film and cultural performances to educate the general population about our world’s rich cultural diversity, to inspire others to get involved in cross-cultural exchanges, and to promote awareness about important social and cultural organizations operating in the areas where the festival is held.

As such, the Beyond Borders Film Festival showcases films and cultural performances that uplift the human spirit, and demonstrate respect and wonder for human creativity and the natural environment. Exploring the ties that bind all people together, the festival addresses the spiritual and cultural impulses that accompany the human condition, as well as the many ways we express these impulses.
