ImageSPNN's Real Reality TV spring workshop is focused and filmming and you can check out all the action at their blog! Learn what these youth are working on, what they thought of the class and how they tackled their topics.

NEWS:

ImageSTORY BOARD kicked off the year in 2007 with the Independent Short Film Project "Good Morning". The film set the tone for Story Board's mission to involve youth in meaningful roles on professional film productions happening in Minnesota. "Good Morning" included collaborative partnerships with many of the film industries production houses and suppliers in the Twin Cities. Youth were apart of the production working side by side with professionals in every position, learning the craft and art of filmmaking. Director Sarah Morreim, premiered "Good Morning" in the Spring of 2008 and has since screened with festival's throughout the country. Many of the youth involved on the project continue to work with Story Board and persue other filmmaking opportunities in the Twin Cities.

"GOOD MORNING" will screen in the Minneapolis - St. Paul International Film Festival April 29th, 7pm at the St. Anthony Main Theater.

NEWS:

Congratulations to TCYMN Steering Committee Member, Nancy Norwood, on receiving the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts : National Distinguished Teacher in the Arts Award for her work as the Media Arts teacher at Perpich Center for Arts Education.

Congratulations to Mike Hazard, director of The Center for International Education, and TCYMN Steering Committee Member, for making it to the final round in the Bush Artists Fellowship Awards for 2008.


EVENTS:

ImageMAY 23rd is the .EDU Film Festival at the Parkway Theater.

April 23rd is the deadline for High School students to submit their films.

* See your film on the big screen at the Parkway Theater in Minneapolis.
* Watch short films made by young people from around the state.
* Spend the day with student filmmakers from all walks of life.
* Speak one-on-one with industry pros and post-secondary reps.
* Learn how to make the transition from student filmmaker to industry professional.

How does it help your communities?

That’s the question the Keith Ellison campaign is posing to Minnesota , and we want to hear your answers in video form!

Keith’s Youtube channel, http://www.youtube. com/keithellison dotorg is launching the project later this month, and we’d like to be able to have some example videos on the site by the time it starts to get promoted. Can you help?

We are asking you to make a short (60 sec.) video expressing the importance of getting out to vote. Upload the video onto Youtube.com so it can be added to the KeithEllison. org channel.

Make it fun! Creativity is a plus.

the “I Am Minnesota’s Future” Video Contest

Today’s students are Minnesota’s future. The Citizens League invites them to celebrate Minnesota’s 150th birthday by producing creative videos that express their views on three important questions:

“What kind of state do you want to live in when you’re an adult?”
“What should be done to make sure that happens?”
“What do today’s young people have to contribute to this future?”

YOUTH MEDIA OPPORTUNITY:

NATIVE AMERICAN YOUTH GET YOUR FILM ON!
Here are some great opportunities coming up with Migizi Communications:

1) A 10-week institute for students finishing 10th and 11th grade in cooperation with MCTC's Cinema Division.

2) Part time positions for students interested in working with three and four year olds teaching them technology/media tools and early literacy skills.

3) Recruiting American Indian young people (minimum of high school completion) to participate in the American Indian Summer Institute in Los Angeles in June. The program will also include a week long job shadowing experience in selected departments at Fox 9 here locally prior to going out to LA.

OPPORTUNTITIES FOR YOUTH MEDIA PROFESSIONALS:

An article published April 15th by the Youth Media Reporter researched the various youth media networks forming through out the country. Anecdotal advise and stumbling blocks are discussed and some of the benefits of working together are highlighted.

Excerpt:
"A dozen youth media nonprofit heads are better than one.

At least that's what the consultants and funders would lead you to believe when they call for the formation of nonprofit youth media networks, as they have increasingly lately. But as any under-resourced, overtaxed nonprofit leader can attest, the benefits aren't always worth the time and effort invested into joining their peers.

Yet with proper planning and execution, nonprofit youth media networks can create large scale social impact not possible by one organization working alone. This is especially critical given the increasing pressure for more networking and sharing from both within the field and from funders and external stakeholders. If networks are going to be established and cultivated, there are some basic preparatory tips that can make the experience useful and enjoyable for participants." ....

SUMMER MEDIA WORKSHOPS PLANNED

Perpich Center for Arts Education will be offering two classes this summer for teachers and will be led by nationally recognized media arts teacher Nancy Norwood (left). Two semester graduate credits are available for these classes through Bemidji State University for $100/credit. Classes are limited to 14 and are expected to fill up quickly. THE PEOPLE SPEAK VIDEO CONTEST: Think Globally, Report Locally
Got media skills? Interested in the connection between your life and global issues? This is the contest for you.

What is this?
Students choose one of four global issues:
Kick the Habit – De-carbonizing our lifestyles and economies
World Heritage – Local sites and international interests
Growing Up Girl – Challenges facing girls everywhere
World Water – Access to clean water
Then, find the local angle to the issue, and create a 1-2 minute video news story.
Three winning teams of up to two students and one teacher will receive an all expenses-paid trip to attend the United Nations Foundation Youth Leadership Summit. This summit, held July 17-19 at the United Nations headquarters in New York , is an exciting opportunity to meet other students interested in global issues, receive a special UN tour and the opportunity, and meet high-ranking UN officials. The trip covers the cost of two students and one educator.
Deadlines and details

The contest officially opens February 1, 2008 and the final deadline to submit entries is May 2, 2008.

GRANTS:

PAY IT FORWARD FOUNDATION GRANT
The Pay it Forward Foundation offers Students the opportunity to identify what they consider to be the challenges of their communities. They tackle such problems as homelessness, pollution, youth violence, literacy issues, the loneliness experienced by long-term hospital and nursing home patients, and the alienation of today's at-risk youth from the community. The Pay It Forward Foundation provides seed money for such worthwhile projects.

Your school, church or community youth group may apply for this $500 mini-grant to fund a one time project with a Pay It Forward focus. Applications will be accepted anytime by email to grants@payitforwardfoundation.com.
