About the project:
DUE OUT SPRING 2008
12 year old Casey is making a short documentary on bullying. Her words, "Bullying is a larger problem than people realize. I see how it affects other kids. I know what it feels like and I want to help it stop. I want to tell the truth about who can be a Bully and who can be a victim. I also want to tell the truth about what happens when you talk about your differences and about what is going on to cause the bullying behavior." She has received an Ann Bancroft Dare to Dream Mini-Grant as well as a Mix It Up grant. -TVbyGIRLS website

SPNN YOUTH IN THE NEWS
Youth Producers Kenny Bankhead & Anders Lee make HEADLINES!

On March 29th, two SPNN Youth producers along with SPNN Youth staff attended the Represent! Youth Video screening at the Weisman Art Museum . The screening was in conjunction with two current exhibits at the museum. The screening featured eleven youth produced videos from organizations across the Twin Cities, including six SPNN Youth produced videos. SPNN Youth videos featured include the three PSA’s produced by the 2007 Youth Intern Program, two segments from Set It Up, and a video from a 2007 Neighborhood Video Camp. All of the films shown were great, and showcased the broad range of topics that youth filmmakers are tackling.

SPNN Youth producers Anders Lee and Kenny Bankhead were interviewed by journalists from the Twin Cities Daily Planet and By the People, a blog based out of the University of Minnesota ’s Center for Citizenship and Democracy. The articles can be found here:

NEWS:

ImageOn Location Academy program facilitated high school students involvement in the production of the independent short film "Good Morning" in 2007. The film screened on 29th as part of the Minneapolis - St. Paul International Film festival, MN Shorts program.

About the program:
OLA Productions are rigorous, immersive, multi-day programs where high school aged filmmakers are able to experience a film production from beginning to end working with a professional film crew as an Apprentice.

ImageBE A PEER MENTOR at SPNN

SPNN Youth Programs is looking for youth ages 14-21 with media, leadership, and mentoring experience to assist with our summer media programs. “Peer Mentors” will work anywhere from 1-8 weeks assisting instructors in camps, short term classes, and our intern program. If you know of a young people who might be interested, please pass on the attached application. All youth are welcome to apply.

the “I Am Minnesota’s Future” Video Contest

Today’s students are Minnesota’s future. The Citizens League invites them to celebrate Minnesota’s 150th birthday by producing creative videos that express their views on three important questions:

“What kind of state do you want to live in when you’re an adult?”
“What should be done to make sure that happens?”
“What do today’s young people have to contribute to this future?”

YOUTH MEDIA OPPORTUNITY:

NATIVE AMERICAN YOUTH GET YOUR FILM ON!
Here are some great opportunities coming up with Migizi Communications:

1) A 10-week institute for students finishing 10th and 11th grade in cooperation with MCTC's Cinema Division.

2) Part time positions for students interested in working with three and four year olds teaching them technology/media tools and early literacy skills.

3) Recruiting American Indian young people (minimum of high school completion) to participate in the American Indian Summer Institute in Los Angeles in June. The program will also include a week long job shadowing experience in selected departments at Fox 9 here locally prior to going out to LA.

YOUTH MEDIA OPPORTUNITY:

ImageSPNN YOUTH INTERNSHIP - now accepting applications!

SPNN Youth is now accepting applications from ninth through eleventh grade St. Paul high school students for its summer Youth Intern Program (YIP). YIP is an intensive paid program where St. Paul teens work together to make meaningful media about community issues. This program provides hands-on media production experience including camera operation, interviewing, and digital editing. Bus passes are provided during the program. YIP 2008 starts on July 14th and runs until August 21st. Youth commit to sixteen hours per week during that time and receive both pay and St. Paul high school elective credits. SUMMER MEDIA WORKSHOPS PLANNED

Perpich Center for Arts Education will be offering two classes this summer for teachers and will be led by nationally recognized media arts teacher Nancy Norwood (left). Two semester graduate credits are available for these classes through Bemidji State University for $100/credit. Classes are limited to 14 and are expected to fill up quickly. GRANTS:

PAY IT FORWARD FOUNDATION GRANT
The Pay it Forward Foundation offers Students the opportunity to identify what they consider to be the challenges of their communities. They tackle such problems as homelessness, pollution, youth violence, literacy issues, the loneliness experienced by long-term hospital and nursing home patients, and the alienation of today's at-risk youth from the community. The Pay It Forward Foundation provides seed money for such worthwhile projects.

Your school, church or community youth group may apply for this $500 mini-grant to fund a one time project with a Pay It Forward focus. Applications will be accepted anytime by email to grants@payitforwardfoundation.com.
