Youth Engagement Symposium Series
The Howland Symposium is designed to bridge research and practice around critical youth development issues. It is hosted by the Center for Youth Development and made possible with funds from the Minnesota 4-H Foundation’s Howland Endowment.
Join national and local experts in youth engagement as we learn from current research and innovative practice, and unveil a statewide initiative to support and promote youth engagement.
The stories of the Depression Era and World War II are carried by our elders who are in their 80s and 90s. This means that little amazing stories of connections, courage, and quiet heroism are being lost. In making the Greatest Girls project, we found that women's stories of this time are rarely shared.
TRACES is a non-profit organization that links people of the Midwest U.S. with people in Germany and Austria (the enemy during World War II), to learn how we maintained our humanity during a time of great conflict between our countries. A June 11th, 2008 screening of the Greatest Girls films helped highlight the important roles that women played during that time, roles that are too often ignored.
"We were excited," recalls TVbyGIRLS executive director, Barbara Wiener, "to share our Greatest Girls films at TRACES... by connecting with elder women in our project, girls learned that women not only contribute to our history...they actually shaped our America in the most caring and compassionate ways."
Message from TVbyGIRLS: Are you a girl age 10 to 19 (or know one) who is interested in media making and sharing your voice? Join TVbyGIRLS in our next open workshop on Saturday, October 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Minneapolis College of Art and Design, fourth floor room 414. MCAD is located at 2501 Stevens Avenue South in Minneapolis, MN 55404. Fee is $50 (with scholarships available). Contact Rebecca at Rebecca@tvbygirls.tv for more info.
A partnership of Story Board, The Loft Literary Center and The MN Opera
"Pinocchio - Story, Stage and Screen" is a series of filmmaking workshops for teenagers inspired by The Minnesota Opera's American premiere of The Adventures of Pinocchio.
High school students are invited to submit their own 3-5 minute adaptation of the classic Pinocchio story for a chance to win over an audience of peers and $500.
Filmmaking is hard, and the competition will be tough... so Story Board, the Loft Literary Center and the MN Opera are teaming up with professional filmmakers to give students an edge: a series of workshops covering everything a student will need to produce a quality film.
The series begins on Saturday, September 27th (1-3pm) with a FREE workshop for high school students on the art of adaptation at The Loft Literary Center. Minnesota's very own Ali Selim, Director/Writer of Sweet Land, will be the guest speaker at the workshop!
In this free, six-week class, you’ll learn interviewing, research, writing and photography to write and publish an article of your choice. Taught by Ruben Rosario, much-honored columnist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
