According to Net Applications, it's been a good month for Microsoft. Internet Explorer 8 gained more market share to continue dominating the browser market, and Windows 7 surpassed its predecessor--Windows Vista--in market share for the first time. So, what exactly is driving the success of Windows 7?
1. Management. With integrated support for PowerShell 2.0, Windows 7 provides a superior infrastructure for IT admins to be able to automate common tasks and manage the desktops more efficiently.
IT admins can create powerful scripts with PowerShell 2.0. PowerShell uses the Windows Management Interface (WMI), and can call command-line tools--making it a very versatile tool for IT admins.

Although Apple’s iPhone 4 is experiencing antenna issues that could turn some enterprise customers away, the company’s devices are host to some of the best smartphone applications available for CIOs. Currently, Apple offers more than 240,000 applications in its App Store. Many of these are games and other titles designed for consumers, but there are several that focus squarely on the enterprise space. Even better, there are several programs available for Apple’s smartphone that are ideal for the typical CIO who needs to not only be productive while running a company, but also be able to perform basic work functions while away from a computer. Whether it is the ability to send a fax from the device, or to simply edit some documents sent from employees, CIOs must be productive no matter where they are. Staying productive is not always easy with a smartphone, but with the right iPhone apps, and a willingness to drop a few bucks, it is at least possible. Some had hoped it would bend the rules to fix critical flaw
Computerworld - Although some had hoped that Microsoft would violate its own patching policy, the company yesterday stuck to its guns and declined to provide a fix for a critical bug to users running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
On Monday, Microsoft shipped an emergency patch for the Windows shortcut bug that attackers have been exploiting for several weeks. The vulnerability affects all versions from Windows 2000 on, including XP, Vista and Windows 7.
But, per Microsoft's practice, the oldest operating systems and service packs were denied the update.
"To be crystal clear, there is no security update for XP SP2," said Microsoft spokesman Christopher Budd in a Webcast on the out-of-band patch that he hosted Monday afternoon.
Online Trends: Mobile E-Mail Replacing Desktop E-Mail
When Nielsen published "What Americans Do Online", it revealed that social networking and social gaming both beat out e-mail to dominate the time users spend online...on the desktop. However, it also revealed another interesting trend--when it comes to mobile online activity from devices like smartphones, e-mail is king.
Mobile e-mail is quickly replacing desktop e-mail as the primary means of messaging.Artwork: Chip TaylorAccording to the Nielsen study measuring online activity of 200,000 users and comparing results from 2010 to the previous year, e-mail use on the desktop dropped from 12 percent to 8.3 percent, and fell into third place behind social gaming like Farmville. Meanwhile, time spent on e-mail on mobile devices went up from 37 percent to 42 percent--clearly dominating other mobile online activities.
