Meetings Are Like Broccoli
Linwood Bailey
Fields of Success

As you sit in meetings, do you often wonder?

  • Why are we having this meeting?
  • How am I going to deal with the work that is piling up on my desk?
  • Could we accomplish what needs to be done without having this meeting?

It gets even worse when you are leading the meeting and the participants are pondering these questions about your meeting!

Any way you look at it, meetings are a part of work. A study performed by the National Statistics Council revealed that 37% of employees’ time is spent in meetings. Meetings serve as forums for communicating and making decisions. However, many meetings are ineffective. They do not yield results that help organizations accomplish their goals and objectives. Meetings can sometimes be events that create confusion and even frustration. When you conduct effective meetings you increase your effectiveness and productivity as well as the effectiveness and productivity of individuals who attend your meetings.

Meetings are like broccoli.

Timely Tips: 10 Tech Fixes You Can Make Right Now
Some stuff won't ever work the way we want it to.

To wit: That cellular dead spot on Route 23 in Merion, Pa., will remain dead. Home printers will drop off their networks, only to later spring back to life, all for no apparent reason. And your Sirius signal will continue to cut out at the exact moment Howard Stern is grilling that new porn star.

The same is true at the office--printers fail; computers crash; the Web wobbles. All of which has nothing to do with another fact of life: There are plenty of things--at minimal expense--you can do right now to make life easier and your hours more productive.

Gartner: Cloud Computing Contributes To Mass IT Asset Exodus
Cloud computing will take such a stranglehold on the market as companies try to reduce hardware spending that Gartner has made the bold proclamation that one-fifth of all businesses will own absolutely no IT assets come 2012.

Gartner's forecast signals a massive market shift and opens the door for solution providers to find a new revenue stream with cloud-based services as they help clients migrate from legacy hardware and software environments to the cloud.

Mutiny In IT
Just like on the Bounty, the deck hands are restless.

I've always wondered whether, during the mutiny on the H.M.S. Bounty, Captain Bligh asked himself, "How did it come to this? What did I miss?" Today's C-level executives are watching a similar uprising. This time the malcontents are employees, and their beef involves freedom of technology.

A trend is taking hold in companies, big and small. Business people, not information technology staff, are making the crucial decisions about software rollouts. Whether it's collaboration software like Microsoft's ( MSFT - news - people ) SharePoint or cloud-based customer relationship management packages like Salesforce.com ( CRM - news - people ), it's sales, marketing and branch office workers--and not the IT staff--that are doing the purchasing and overseeing the deployment.

The era of centralized control over IT systems by your IT department is over.

The 12 most annoying types of Facebookers

facebook.jpgFacebook, for better or worse, is like being at a big party with all your friends, family, acquaintances and co-workers.

Facebook can be a great tool, and an occasional annoyance. What kind of Facebooker are you?

There are lots of fun, interesting people you're happy to talk to when they stroll up. Then there are the other people, the ones who make you cringe when you see them coming. This article is about those people.
