Gartner Says Worldwide PC Shipments Grew 27 Percent in First Quarter of 2010
All Regions Experienced Double-Digit Growth Rates

laptop2Worldwide PC shipments totaled 84.3 million units in the first quarter of 2010, a 27.4 percent increase from the first quarter of 2009, according to preliminary results by Gartner, Inc. These first quarter results have exceeded Gartner's earlier market outlook. Gartner had been expecting first quarter PC shipments to grow 22 percent.

"The stronger-than-expected growth was led by a robust recovery in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) PC market, which grew 24.8 percent in the first quarter of 2010," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. "All other regions recorded double-digit growth rates, although the U.S. and Latin America were slightly lower than what we had expected."

The security-hole baton passes from Microsoft to Adobe
And Apple increasingly looks like the next major vendor whose products could give hackers a way to wreak havoc

MS-AdobeIt's a cliché that Microsoft's Windows, Outlook, and Office are prime venues for malware and hackers to get into your PCs and networks. But in recent years, Microsoft has tightened up its security issues -- and Adobe Systems has increasingly become the sloppy vendor whose products such as Acrobat and Flash increasingly pose the security holes that bedevil IT. And Apple could be next.

Microsoft vs. AdobeAs co-founder and CTO of eEye Digital Security, Marc Maiffret spent much of his time immersed in the world of Microsoft insecurity. When there was a large zero-day vulnerability to be attacked, eEye was usually among the first to find it. He left that job three years ago. In that time, Microsoft has gained newfound respect for its security efforts while other popular software vendors are fingered for making the same mistakes. In an interview with CSO Tuesday, two names came to mind for Maiffret, now chief security architect at FireEye: Adobe, which faces growing criticism for widely exploited flaws in its software, and Apple, which is increasingly the focus of malware writers even though it hasn't seen the level of attacks Microsoft and Adobe have.

New variant of Storm worm emerges
The new version of the prolific worm is based on old code but does not appear to be as robust

virusA new variant of the Storm worm has emerged, but it does not appear to be as well-designed as its older relative, according to computer security researchers.

The Storm worm first appeared in early 2007 and spread quickly, making it one of the most prolific and widespread worms ever. Once it infected people's computers, the worm sent million upon millions of spam messages.

Gartner Outlines Three Steps to Create a Successful CRM Strategy
Analysts to Discuss Key Elements of CRM Strategy at Gartner's Customer 360 Summit
crmSTAMFORD, Conn., April 14, 2010 — Building a customer relationship management (CRM) strategy is a unique process for each organization that nevertheless should always involve three key steps, according to Gartner, Inc. The three steps needed to create a successful CRM strategy are: setting the destination; auditing the current situation; and mapping the journey to the destination.

Customer Resource Management"A CRM strategy cannot be developed in isolation. It must be relevant and linked to the overall corporate strategy, and it must build on existing sales or marketing strategies that are already in use," said Ed Thompson, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. "Following these three steps will provide a solid framework for CRM success."

InfoWorld review: Free remote access tools for Windows and Mac
The best free tools combine firewall friendliness with easy remote access and an amazing array of handy features
remoteFor anyone whose work follows them wherever they go (and whose doesn't?), a remote access solution is an easy sell. With a remote access tool, your office computer can be reached from home, your home computer can be reached from the office, and both can be reached from your hotel in Omaha or Maui or wherever you happen to be. Remote access means nothing ever gets left behind -- except maybe your laptop.

Best of all, a good remote access tool doesn't have to cost you a dime. There are plenty of good free tools available, and some of them are downright excellent. In this review, I examine seven of the most popular free remote access tools available for Windows and, in four cases, Mac users. Many of the free tools listed here also have paid versions that offer additional features (such as support for remote printing) or licensing (extra host computers or clients). For some users, the paid version will be the only true option.
