2010 IT Market Compensation Study Shows A Slow, But Steady Road To Recovery

UpwardTrend2In today’s economy, many CIOs and human resources (HR) leaders continue to be required to do more with less, and will not be able to restore budgets and head count to pre-recession levels, according to a recent survey by Gartner, Inc. The survey showed that the recovery in jobs or an increase in head count during the past 12 months was in short-term, temporary contractor positions more than in permanent staff positions.

According to a survey of 358 U.S.-based organizations effective March 1, 2010, the median rate of increase in IT head count was 6.3 percent across all respondents. About 28 percent of those surveyed reported no change in IT head count for the period of March 1, 2009 to February 28, 2010.

Microsoft Hopes To Bury iPhone, Android

getNewsImages?n=technologyNews&u=USTRE6905PY20101002&i=1Last month, a few hundred Microsoft Corp employees acted out their fantasy with a mock funeral for Apple Inc’s iPhone at its Redmond, Washington campus.

The bizarre gathering, which morphed into a spirited Michael Jackson “Thriller” dance routine, marked the completion of its Windows Phone 7 software, and showed how badly Microsoft wants to resurrect itself in the viciously competitive phone market.

The new software, which will be publicly unveiled on October 11 and expected on handsets in stores by November, is Microsoft’s last chance, some analysts say, to catch up with Apple and Google Inc’s Android smartphones, after squandering its strong market position in only a few years.

Security Software Market is Poised for 11 Percent Growth in 2010

security-software-2Worldwide security software revenue is forecast to surpass $16.5 billion in 2010, an 11.3 percent increase from 2009 revenue of $14.8 billion, according to Gartner, Inc. Although the economic downturn slowed security revenue to 7 percent growth in 2009, organizations have indicated an intention to give priority to security budgets.

“Most segments of the security software market will continue to grow over the next few years, although a significant degree of variation is expected between the more-established and less-mature technologies,” said Ruggero Contu, principal research analyst at Gartner. “Overall, security will remain one of the fastest-growing areas within the enterprise software market.”

Net Neutrality Deal Collapses

Sen. Harry Waxman (D-Calif.) says proposed legislation to regulate Internet service providers is dead.

Legislation aimed at regulating how Internet providers such as Comcast offer Internet service to their customers has collapsed, said House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman and Sen. Harry Waxman (D-Calif.), who also authored the proposed bill. A draft of the bill was leaked earlier this week, which would curb the FCC’s (Federal Communications Commission) ability to enforce the guidelines laid out in the bill after two years. The agency would also not be allowed to impose additional rules on Internet service providers, the draft mandated.

“Goldilocks” Planet Found, Could Possibly Support Human Life

Ideal planet discovered 20 light-years away.

Astronomers have found an Earth-like planet that they believe can support life. The newly discovered exoplanet Gliese 581g, dubbed Planet G, exists in the Gliese 581 system and is believed to be the right size and location for life according to a press release and webcast from the National Science Foundation.

Part of a six-member family of planets, this particular exoplanet is situated in the middle of the system’s habitable region.  Scientists believe the temperatures at this position would be ideal for sustaining liquid water on the planet’s surface.
