Gartner Says Demand for Highly Qualified Windows 7 Migration IT Personnel Will Exceed Supply in 2011 and 2012, Leading to Higher Service Rates

The need to migrate from Microsoft Windows XP and Windows 2000 to Windows 7 in a tight time frame will create an extra budgetary and resource burden on companies from 2011 to 2012, according to Gartner, Inc. During that period, demand for highly qualified Windows 7 migration IT personnel will exceed supply, leading to higher service rates.

Gartner analysts said most organizations will need to find extra funds or redirect budgets away from other projects to complete the Windows migration on time.

“Corporate IT departments typically prefer to migrate PC operating systems (OSs) via hardware attrition, which means bringing in the new OS as they replace hardware through a normal refresh cycle,” said Charles Smulders, managing vice president at Gartner. “Microsoft will support Windows XP for four more years. With most migrations not starting until the fourth quarter of 2010 at the earliest, and PC hardware replacement cycles typically running at four to five years, most organizations will not be able to migrate to Windows 7 through usual planned hardware refresh before support for Windows XP ends.”

Faced with this need to accelerate migration in 2011 and 2012, organizations have three options:

15 Things Every PC User Should Know

Whether you're a grizzled tech veteran or an uninitiated newbie, here are 15 essential facts and tricks that you ought to know.

Think you know tech? If you don't have a handle on every single one of these 15 tech facts, habits, and efficiency tricks, you're not living up to your potential.

1. Don't double-click everything. Windows 101: Double-clicking is how you open items in Windows. It's not how you open links in your Web browser, click buttons in dialog boxes, or do pretty much anything else--and if you reflexively double-click, you might accidentally zip right past something important or submit a form twice. If you don't need this reminder yourself, chances are you know someone who does.

Gartner Says Worldwide PC Shipments to Increase 19 Percent in 2010 with Growth Slowing in Second Half of the Year

Worldwide PC shipments are projected to total 367.8 million units in 2010, a 19.2 percent increase from 308.3 million units shipped in 2009, according to the latest preliminary forecast by Gartner, Inc.

"The PC market revived in the first half of 2010, but the real test of its resilience is yet to come," said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner. "We have reduced our forecast for second-half 2010 PC growth to 15.3 percent, approximately 2 percent below our previous forecast, in light of the uncertain economic outlook for the United States and Western Europe. There is no doubt that consumer, if not business PC demand has slowed relative to expectations in mature markets. Recent dramatic shifts in the PC supply chain were in no small part a reaction to fears of a sharp slowdown in mature-market demand. However, suppliers' risk-aversion is as much a factor in these shifts as any actual downshift in demand."

Protect Your Network From Facebook Malware

Reports are circulating of yet another malware scam targeting Facebook users. The sheer size of the social network, combined with the inherent trust users place in messages from friends and family through Facebook make it a prime target for malware attacks to exploit.

AppRiver report that they are detecting a new malware campaign targeting Facebook. The campaign tricks unsuspecting users into thinking the message is coming from Facebook. The e-mail appears to be an official Facebook notification indicating the reader can reconnect with friends, but the message is full of malicious links. Clicking on one of the malicious links will then redirect them through several different Web sites and load malware onto their computer through a hidden iframe exploit.

Is Blackberry Losing Ground?

Just a year ago, BlackBerry smartphones ruled the workplace. With their large QWERTY keypads, fast "push" e-mail, and robust security options, these sleek black handhelds were ubiquitous in business. We've all seen "crackberry" users typing furiously with their thumbs, wearing belt-clip pouches.

But no king can rule forever, as RIM — makers of BlackBerry handheld devices — is now finding out.

According to a recent Gartner report, the company's market share dropped to a 33 percent this year. Last year, they absolutely owned the smartphone market with a 52.5 percent market share in the U.S. That's a free-fall drop of nearly 20 percentage points. So what gives?
