Happy New Year!
Hello Jeannie,
I am sorry that I have taken so long to get back with you, however, you know my love for duck hunting. I hunted for most of January in Mississippi, and then I was behind in almost everything. You should have received your THRC Membership Directory and calendar listing the 2010 Spring HT Event, currently underway. Enclosed with the directory is a Membership application (center fold); it is time to pay your 2010 dues, if renewing. Please include the updated form along with your payment and send it to Jim now. Your dues assist THRC in hosting the best hunt tests around. Another form can be printed from the THRC website for sponsoring new members. Remember that the Borderline grounds are for our members to train, so please help us take care of them.
A friend sent me this note describing Texas: “Wow – was Texas fun or what! Mud, rain, scorpions, mud, stickers, friends– old and new, good food, good beer, mud, excellent dog work, camaraderie, cool horses, hard work, and a good time.” You can view her gallery to see photos of the event at http://mcsphotography.com.
THRC 2010 Spring Event is up on Entry Express. Three of the 2010 Master National judges are judging the event: Mary Williams, North Carolina (Region 1), Myrna Zumwalt, Nevada (Region 4) and Bill Cummins Jr, Oklahoma (Region 3). Keith Kiesow, Wisconsin (Region 2) could not make our event because of a prior obligation. THRC’s event will close Monday, March 8th.
I was recently in Coring, CA for a Master National (MN) Board meeting where the 2010 MN event will be held. The grounds and the facility are beautiful and include a 1,400 acre hunting club located at Rolling Hills Casino. Check it out at http://www.clearcreeksportsclub.com. I looked it up on MapQuest and it is estimated to be 2 days and 4 hours away. While we were viewing the grounds about 5 different groups were out training on them. They have been running hunt tests and field trials there for about a year and the MN hopes that this facility will be their permanent grounds for this region.
The Master National web page is going to have an overhaul. The new webpage is going to have Facebook and a blog. We are getting high-tech—watch it happen! Visit the current page at http://www.masternational.com for the January newsletter and a sneak-peek of the 2011 event.
Happy training,
Sam Ferguson
Highlights from the 2009 Event:
•THRC had 3 club members that went for the first time: Catherine Kelly, Eddie Rodriguez and Mark Garver.
•Fay Norwood and Ocoee JJ MH was honored as the second dog to receive 8 passes.
•Youngest dog was handled by a THRC club member, Jill Volsch.
Annual Meeting
Quaifying Scores -the delegates approved a new requirement to qualify for the event: six (6) passes that replaces the 5 of 7 or 8 total requirements. This new requirement is effective August 1, 2009 so all passes since that date count. If the dog qualified at this year‘s event, they get credit for 2 passes toward the six required.
Qualifying Scores - Exception: Any dog that ran and qualified at the previous year's Master National event needs only 4 qualifications during the next year in order to qualify to run in the upcoming MN event. This will go into effect August 1, 2009.
Be Your Dog’s Hero
Help us chase away K9 cancer ...
On a more serious note, I wanted to bring your attention to a cause that we’ve recently discovered: Chase Away K9 Cancer. It was founded by a dog owner who lost her black Lab to cancer and wants to prevent others from going through that pain- so far she has raised over $300,000. As dog lovers, I think that is a cause we can all support. THRC will be selling cups at the Spring hunt test with proceeds going to Chase Away K9 Cancer. More information will be available at the check-in table (ask about it when you stop for lunch). The website is http://www.chaseawayk9cancer.org and there is a link if you want to donate directly.

—Already this year we have lost some very dear friends, both two-legged and four-legged. Instead of being sad because they are no longer with us, let's take a moment of silence and remember all the good times that we had together. They have crossed the bridge of memories and are never very far from us ~ Beckey Malphus' Emmitt, Aurelia Carter's Scotch and Patrick, Mrs. Yanke (Chuck's mother), Mrs. Strickland (Bear's mother), and Mrs. Higgins (John's mother). You all take care of each other up there. We miss you!
— Keep Gary Corbin in your thoughts and prayers as he continues to recuperate from back surgery.
— City of Tallahassee residents may want to read the newly proposed animal ordinance for city residents. Read more at http://www.talgov.com/animals/prop.cfm. Feel free to contact the Tallahassee City Commissioners with your thoughts on this. Do not let the fact that you reside in the county or surrounding county stop you from calling.
— We want to welcome the following new members to THRC:
-
Diane and Rich Barnett (Palatine, IL)
-
Roger Crawford and Patty Bahmann (Tallahassee, FL)
