Celebrate World Book Day with the Talloires Network!

Talloires Network Student Project:

In applying to attend a recent student conference, Brett Hall and Natalie Alexander made commitments to undertake a project addressing human rights through literacy, an effort aligned with the Talloires Network Global Project.

This student project, in its early planning stages, will coordinate the collection of books, computers and other educational materials and then distribute them to a number of schools throughout the developing world, which are currently in dire need of resources.

There are two schools located in South Africa, in the Free State and Mpumalanga provinces, two on 'Eua Island in the Kingdom of Tonga and several in the Phillipines. Arrangements are currently being made to establish links with further schools in East Timor, South Africa and the South Pacific.

About the Students:

Brett Hall and Natalie Alexander are both students at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.  Brett is studying Arts and Human Services, and Natalie is pursuing a Business and Journalism degree.

How You Can Help:

The schools in question range from Lower Primary to Upper Secondary. The resources will be distributed in accordance with the needs of each particular school. Brett and Natalie are also looking for sponsorship to cover the costs of shipping the resources from Australia to each of these countries.

The Talloires Network Global Project commits member institutions to promote literacy and expand access to education.  Please encourage your institution to contribute to this effort by donating books or resources to this promising student project.  To learn how you can help, contact Brett Hall  at bc.hall@student.qut.edu.au

About World Book Day:

World Book Day was initiated by UNESCO to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity.
