Award-winning designer David Rockwell of Rockwell Group was commissioned to restore the historic look and traditional elegance to one of San Francisco’s most beloved hotel lobbies—which will make its debut this summer. “Meet us at the clock” will have a double meaning with the opening in early summer of acclaimed chef Michael Mina’s CLOCK BAR , to be located within the historic lobby… and, drum roll please, the Great Magneta Clock will return this summer to its historic location to the place where countless friends and lovers have met over the past century.

As the official place to catch a cab on Union Square, the hotel is once again showing appreciation to the taxi drivers of San Francisco. During this special event, a team from the hotel will hand-deliver (on silver platters, no less) Starbucks coffee and donuts to over 350 drivers. Hail to the taxi drivers!

CLOCK BAR, located within the main hotel lobby, will represent a modern day restoration to a bygone era. This new bar concept from Michael Mina will specialize in handcrafted cocktails where both visitors and locals can share small plates and enjoy a classic cocktail or discover a new favorite. The intimate space will entice guests to linger on the rich leather lounges, surrounded by custom dyed wall-coverings, and two central columns covered in champagne and amber colored hand-blown glass.

With CLOCK BAR, Michael Mina presents a modern day speakeasy, celebrating an era when cocktails were made with care using proper methods and ingredients, when a bar was more than a place to “grab a drink”, but rather a daily ritual to gather amongst friends and business partners. Once again the phrase “meet me at the clock” will ring through the streets of Union Square.

When the hotel opened more than a century ago, much commerce was traded through coins. As a very special service the hotel arranged to wash coins for guests, in order to help keep women’s gloves from being sullied. While hardly anyone wears gloves anymore, to this day, Rob Holsen an employee since 1978, continues the coin washing efforts as a nod to the past. The coins are washed by hand and go through the antique machine, which has been in use since 1935. Have your coins washed by calling 415-774-0146.

The hotel’s signature social hour at Caruso’s, held from 5 to 7pm every Tuesday through Saturday, now features Ceja Vineyards’ exquisite Napa Valley wines.
