Legislative Update: The GIVE Act, Summer of Service, and the Energy Conservation Corps

Over the past two years, ICP has developed a proposal for a national Summer of Service (SOS) program that would enable a large number of young teens to participate in service as a “rite of passage” from middle to high school and provide opportunities for them to enter their teenage years with a positive experience that reinforces their connections to the community, enlivens their education, and strengthens their personal and civic values. In late 2007, the Summer of Service concept was included in H.R.2857, the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education (GIVE) Act. Recent weeks have see a flurry of legislative activity related to national service since the GIVE Act was brought to the House floor for a vote. Read More>>

200 Join Youth Scheme
March 22, Fiji - About 200 youths in the Western
Division have registered for the National Youth Service Scheme, says senior youth officer Western Patrick Morgam.

What's This? The National Youth Service Scheme (NYSS) is a new employment promotion initiative by the Fiji government to increase "green" employment opportunities, incomes, and productivity for youths 15-35 years of age. Go to the Fiji Ministry of Youth & Sports website to learn more about NYSS while they work on developing their own website.
 


 
Kenya: Face-Off Looms Over Use of National Youth Service Field 
March 16, Nairobi - A showdown looms between the Kenya police and the National Youth Service over training facilities at the Gilgil NYS training colleges.

Nigeria: Benue Assembly to Investigate Delay in Youth Service
March 25, Lagos - The Benue State House of Assembly has set up an ad-hoc committee to investigate delay by graduates of Benue State University to undergo the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC).

Police Work Program Forging Strong Ties
April 2, Toronto - This summer, another 100 kids from Toronto's most needy neighbourhoods will get a chance to work for the police and 750 more will get jobs as youth outreach workers under a $5.3 million provincial government program.

April 2, Seoul - More Korean men in their 20s will likely enjoy exemption from compulsory military service under the government's policy to offer benefits to college students.

Updated Paper Now Available

New ICP Office Manager

ICP welcomes new Office Manager Kelly Fox to the ICP team. Kelly previously worked for Brown University, and has recently returned from several months of travel and study in Argentina and Chile. ICP regretfully bids good-bye to departing office manager Robin Taylor, who is seeking new opportunities upon the completion of her master's degree in international relations.

The Talloires Network sends students to CGI-U

From March 14-16 2008, university students joined together in New Orleans to attend Clinton Global Initiative - University. 24 students from Talloires Network institutions attended this conference, from 11 universities and 7 countries. These students engaged in Talloires Network workshops and are helping to develop the student-led arm of the Talloires Network. Read more>>
