Purging - Have You Removed The Skeletons From Your Closet Lately?

We are on the second month of our end-of-the-year organizing challenge. Last month you were assigned to create a vision board for the room(s) in your home or office that you would like organized. The assignment was to gather images and words that best described the way you wanted your room(s) to feel, look like, and smell like. Your space is a metaphor of your life. What do you want this room(s) to say about you?

This month we will take the next step in the challenge. That would be purging! How long has it been since you've pulled everything out of your coat closet, linen closet, or bedroom closet? How many skeletons do you have hiding in there? Have you gone through your dresser drawers, your filing cabinet, or junk drawer in the kitchen lately?

messy closet.jpg Many of us don't want to deal with the excess clutter and just close the door/drawer (if it shuts!) on it. It is time to face those demons and begin discarding items that have not been used within the past 6 months, are broken, have missing pieces, and do not make us feel GOOD. The process can be a bit challenging depending on your level of comfort with saying good-bye to your belongings. However, it provides a sense of freedom and growth along with a release of mental, emotional, and physical baggage. For many, it offers a sense of empowerment.

Remember, only focus on the room(s) that you have on your vision board. Make sure to have your tools ready for when you begin.

Your tools are:

  • a box titled 'Keep'
  • a box titled 'Toss'
  • a box titled 'Donate/Give-a-way'
  • timer
  • vision board
  • glass of water

Set the timer and work in 30-minute increments with breaks in between so you don't get overwhelmed and burnt out. The boxes are used to sort what you are keeping, donating, or throwing away. Keep your vision board posted beside you for motivation and inspiration. The water is for when you get thirsty! Begin with a closet, dresser or pantry. Don't tackle the whole space at one time.

Be ruthless when making your decisions. Remember, you are creating a space that represents YOU and your LIFE. Keep only what makes you FEEL GREAT and what you TRULY ENJOY.

According to Timothy Ferriss, author of The 4-Hour Workweek, "It is possible to have too much of a good thing. In excess, most endeavors and possessions take on the characteristics of their opposite...Too much, too many, and too often of what you want becomes what you don't want. This is true of possessions and even time."

On your mark. Get set. PURGE!

Y.E.S. Organizing Tip -
  Preparing for Fall

As we approach the cooler months, it is time to open up space in our closets for those bulky sweaters and make sure that our summer items are properly stored  for next year's use. As a young girl, my mother got me in the habit of packing up my fall/winter clothes for the summer months and my summer clothes packed up for the fall/winter months. This simple step helped in creating enough space for all my treasured attire.

garment bag.jpgBefore packing your belongings away for the season, determine if the items need mending, washing, or if they fit properly. Also consider if that piece of clothing will be in style or if you are going to LIKE it next year. Don't waste valuable storage space on items that don't bring you joy, satisfaction or compliment you in some way. Use clear containers and garment bags with labels to store your wardrobe. A simple clothing rod can be installed in the garage, attic, or basement for hanging out-of-season items.

Keep this tip in mind if you are purging a bedroom closet in the challenge listed above.

Here's what people are saying about Y.E.S..

"Grace Brooke, Your Efficiency Specialist, has helped my 5 year old daughter clear through the clutter and organize her bedroom. We can actually see her floor again! Sometimes, as a parent, it's difficult to get your children to do what you want - even when they know it's good for them! Grace was able to quickly connect with Ella and communicate with clarity, compassion and fun! I never thought I would hear Ella laughing as she was getting rid of her old, beat up, but still treasured Teletubbies! If you've struggled to get your child to clean and organize their room, stop struggling and call Y.E.S!"
