Cleaning Out Your Closets

In 2001, IKEA did a survey of customers in which 31% reported they were more satisfied after clearing out their closets than they were after sex. Could the percentage be even higher in 2008?

Are you needing some 'satisfaction' in your life? Try cleaning out your closet!

Tempting as it is, letting your closet get messy and closing the door to hide the chaos is NOT going to feel very 'satisfing'. Use the questions below to help guide yourself when purging the 80% of the clothes that never get used.

Here are 9 important questions to ask yourself when you begin to declutter a closet.

1. Have I used this item in the past six months to a year?
2. Has anyone else in my home used it in the past year?
3. Do I have a definite use for this in the near future?
4. If it is broken, is it worth fixing/mending?
5. Does this item serve a worthwhile purpose in my life?
6. Do I need to keep it for legal or tax purposes?
7. Is it more important to keep the item than it is to have the space it occupies?
8. Do I love it?
9. Is this item difficult or expensive to replace if a time comes that I need it again?

When you have the items you plan to keep, allow 20 inches of rod length for every 10 shirts. Your closet will automatically look neater. Maximize storage in a limited space by adding an extra clothes rod below one at standard height. Make sure the rods are 12-14 inches from the back wall to accommodate standard hangers.

If you need assistance with the spatial layout of a closet or tips on gaining the maximum storage space, call Y.E.S. today to setup a consultation.

Y.E.S. Organizing Tip -
Behind Closed Doors

Have you ever stopped to think about the unclaimed space on the back of a door? This space is very valuable, yet often goes unused. Often we close the door for privacy or, as mothers, we close it to get some ‘mommy time’. We rarely think about all of the organizing possibilities available with that door/space.

Have a small bathroom? You can gain a great amount of storage space just by utilizing the back of the bathroom door. For example, hanging a contemporary rod, hooks, hanging bins, and a small shelf boost function and style. Try painting the door with a magnetic paint as a base-coat and add a color of choice as a top layer. Add magnetic spice containers to hold smaller items like earrings, rings, clips, vitamins, and bath salts. Slip bracelets around the outside of the containers. Use magnetic hooks to hang necklaces, ribbons, and other light weight accessories. The back of the bathroom door can be used to store extra bath supplies like towels, shampoo and soap.

Is your child running out of places to store toys? On the back of a child’s bedroom or closet door hang a clear shoe organizer. Children can store dolls, action figures, cars, markers, etc. in the pockets. All items are clearly seen and accessible.  Hanging shoe organizers can also be used to store underwear, socks, and other accessories.

Next time you close a door, evaluate the endless organizing possibilities that can be used to gain storage and create function and style.

Y.E.S. Organizing Tool - Electronic Chore Chart

Recently, I discovered this great website which offers children and parents a fun way to get household chores done. Handipoints.com is an interactive website that lets parents setup task lists with a point system and manage goals for each child. The task lists can be printed out or kept electronic. Children adopt their own cartoon cat and use points to buy clothes and gear for their new furry friend. There are other reward systems offered on the website as well. Parents can setup a money reward system or children can buy toys from the online toy store with their reward points. This site is helping children to be happy, healthy and smart.

Children love to 'help' in the kitchen. To keep children preoccupied while you're cooking, consider using bottom drawers for toy storage.
