Are You Up For A Challenge?
Can you believe there are only four months left in 2008? I was thinking the other day about the people that made a New Year's resolution to get organized this year. If you are one of them, have you been working on this goal?
To 'get organized' is not an overnight process. Rather it is a journey and not a destination (kind of like LIFE...it is a journey). It takes time to learn new skills and form new habits.
I thought it would be a rewarding challenge to use these four months to REALLY work on 'getting organized', follow through on your New Year's resolution, and begin creating the life you want to live. If you are up for this challenge, continue reading.
Have you heard of a 'vision board' before? This is a board where you post photos and words expressing your deepest dreams, goals, and visions for your life. The board could be a poster board or the entire wall of a room in your home. (Depending on how in-your-face you would like it to be.) I thought this would be a great start to the challenge. Instead of creating a vision board for your life, narrow it down to photos and words of what you want each room in your home or your office to look like, feel like, and sound like. This first step of the challenge will help you focus on what is really important for the rooms in your home and/or office. In Peter Walsh's book, It's All Too Much, Peter states, "The things you buy, the items you value, the possessions you hoard are all a reflections you YOU, your LIFE, your RELATIONSHIPS, your CAREER, and your ASPIRATIONS. You are not your stuff, but believe me, your stuff reveals a great deal about who you are." Keep in mind that if your efforts to get organized are going to be lasting and meaningful, you don't just 'get organized' - you should organize with purpose! You need to discover that purpose before you begin the whole process of 'getting organized'. Begin looking through magazines, news articles, the internet, and books for inspiration and photos to use on your board.
Good luck to you all!
You will have until the middle of September to complete this project. If you have questions and/or would like to discuss this challenge, please contact me. I am here to assist.

Organization = Success For Kids
There is a wonderful article on the importance of teaching children the skills of organization, as well as time management in the August issue of the Costco Connection. Click on the below to read the article.
Why Johnny Can't Plan
Fight Procrastination Day!
Mark September 3rd on your calendars now...yes, now! Don't do it later, that would be procrastinating. The first Wednesday in September is the official, Fight Procrastination Day. This is the day when you take all those overwhelming, undesirable tasks that have been sitting on your to-do list, waiting to be completed and DO THEM.
Start the day completing the tasks you procrastinate the MOST on. The ones that you HATE to do. Once these are complete, the rest will be easy. You will instantly feel a heavy weight be lifted from your shoulders and a great sense of accomplishment.
For larger more overwhelming projects, consider setting a timer for 15 or 30 minutes. Once the timer goes off, you are done with that project for the day. The timer will give you the 'permission' to quite without feeling guilty.

Y.E.S. Organizing Tip - Roll 'Em
When space is tight, consider rolling your bath and hand towels for easy storage. This simple step of rolling your towels will maximize the space and create a unified look. Place rolled towels (vertically) in baskets on the floor or counter in a bathroom. Another option is to store rolled towels in wire baskets on a shelf in the linen closet or in slide-out bins under a shelf. Or as the photo below illustrates, stack towels on a shelf.
Y.E.S. Organizing Tool - The Office Spot
Here is another great resource tool I just discovered a couple months ago. Have you heard of the local (Sonoma County) business called The Office Spot? It is an office supply store which is located online and offers FREE next day shipping (nationwide). The Office Spot also provides catalogs if you prefer flipping through a book. The company offers all the same products as Staples, Office Depot, and Office Max. However, The Office Spot prides itself on great customer service (they know all their clients names, and favorite pens!) and the fact that they are local. It is important to support our local businesses and to keep the money circulating in our community.
Next time you go to buy folders, bins, and/or a label maker for your next organizing project, consider getting them at The Office Spot. Visit their website at http://www.theofficespot.com for more information.You won't even have to leave your home! How convenient is that?
